Once Upon a Time: “The Brothers Jones” Further Thoughts

The Brothers Jones was one of my favorite episodes of the series and it moved me deeply. I poured my heart into my review for The Nerd Machine, and would love for you all to check it out. Of course there arr always things that I do not have proper room for in those review, which is why I do these further thoughts. Hope you enjoy!

Home and the Future:

As I wrote earlier in the season,“home and the future” have always been ingrained in Emma’s journey and in turn her love story with Killian. Consistency is one of the things that I find remarkable and OUAT has certainly done this, especially the season. The amount of times “home” and the “future” have been referred to is astounding and there are consistencies not only in writing but also the music. In 5A “home” and “future” we’re a large part of the episode “Birth” and “The Broken Kingdom,” written by David H, Goodman and Jerome Schwartz, so it’s not surprising that their episode “The Brothers Jones” continued these references, making it an essential part of it. The moment Killian returns to Emma is an exquisite continuation of the home and future they’re fighting for. Killian’s line to Emma says it all.

future2.gif

(X) (X)

But what’s really beautiful is that the same musical cue that played in the scene where Emma and Killian ignite the Promethean flame, ready for their future together, was played in this moment as well. It should go ahead and just be entitled “Emma and Killian’s Future. “Consistencies like this demonstrate how beautiful and carefully crafted every aspect of the story truly is.

Brilliant Acting:

OUAT always seems to inspire wonderful performances from its actors and in this episode it was Colin O’Donoghue and Bernard Curry. Especially impressive were the similar nuances that made us feel as if they are truly siblings, and not just the one natural ease between them we first saw “Good Form” but also the expressions and mannerisms that are spot on similar, specifically the shy and uncomfortable smile when they are receiving praise. In Bernard’s case, this is an actor who obviously studied Colin’s performance so he can mimic a similar expression.

smile.gifsmile1.gif

(X) (X)

What I love about the last gif here is that Killian deserves all the praise his brother is giving him in this moment and his expression, while still shy is less uncomfortable. It’s humble but accepting, the way you appreciate someone you love complementing you. This is just wonderful acting here. But Colin was truly brilliant not just in one scene in particular but in many. One astounding one was the confrontation between him, Emma and Liam. When Killian is upset he often clenches his jaw and in this moment when Emma says he could come home if you just forgave himself, he’s clenching so tightly, tears brimming in his eyes, unable to even look at Emma. It shows just how torn he is about his decision not to return to Storybrooke. Deep down he longs to, but his self-loathing is so strong at the moment he cannot bring himself to admit it, nor does he think he even deserves it. His pain and torment is all seen in his heartbreaking expression.

Of course he was so good and all his other scenes. Just see for yourself. He conveys much in his eyes and his mannerisms.

Killian’s Self-loathing:

The Killian we’ve known has always been a combination of confidence and bravado mixed with deeply rooted self-loathing and shame for his fault and mistakes. If there were moments and expressions that demonstrated this hatred it would be these and it breaks my heart because in one he’s so young and in the other he is loved so deeply by a woman who sees him as a hero. He’s broken without much hope and his moments of weakness make him feel great shame. He thinks he can never be the brother Liam, and the man that Emma deserves. If only he knew the great strength he is capable of.

A Lucky Ring:

It was already beautiful that Killian gave Emma Liam’s ring saying “bring her home to me.” But now that we’ve seen the exact moment where Liam’s bestows this ring to his brother, the meaning feels even more significant. His lucky ring was the one that always “brought him safely home” so it’s so moving that not only Killian believed it kept him alive and safe, but that he gave its “power “or “luck “to Emma. Equally moving is that now Emma still keeps that ring close to her heart in her quest to bring Killian home. Whether its power is metaphorical or real remains to be seen. It is interesting that after Liam agrees to Hades’ deal that he gives Killian the ring. Was it enchanted to keep him alive? It does seem coincidental that when Killian then gives it away to Emma he is mortally wounded. Regardless, the ring is beautiful symbol of Emma and Killian’s journey to return safely home – a journey Liam began and gave to his brother always wanting the best for him.

Symbolism:

When Killian tells Emma he plans to come home with her, to have the future Liam wanted for him, it’s beautiful and touching. Aesthetically I love the symbolic aspects of the scene. When they kiss and break apart, foreheads still touching light behind their faces shines through symbolizing that there is a light behind them guiding them safely home. The wide shot revealed a painting on the wall behind them of a ship – a ship resembling the one that Liam just departed on. The ones we love are always with us and Liam will always be in Killian’s heart. But now they are both at peace, neither no longer tormented or in pain with how they said goodbye. Seeing the painting there was a way of showing Liam’s guidance to indeed fight for the future he tried to ensure for his brother.

A Final Goodbye:

One of the things that always haunted Killian was the way in which Liam died, helpless and unable to say goodbye. In “Good Form” he tells David that he is fortunate he got to say goodbye to his loved ones for what he thought would be the last time. The fact that he finally got to bid his brother farewell and know that he was a peace was so significant. It gives him the closer that he was once denied, and allows him to move forward in his life with that weight lifted off his shoulders.

“You’re Safe”:

I was moved by Killian’s saying to Liam “you’re safe.” Not “you’re okay or alright” but “safe.” It is difficult to put into words but it is so beautiful to me. He is safe from danger or harm. He will be safe in his journey to the afterlife. From a religious perspective like myself, He will be safe in the arms of the Lord. It is a much more profound word than any other because it reflects peace and comfort and a sense that his pain is gone.

“Not Until Emma and I Defeat Hades”:

defea.gif

(X)

I love this line for several reasons. One, it proclaims a sense of true heroism because it’s not just about saving himself. Everyone came to the Underworld with the intention of saving Killian not defeating Hades necessarily. They discovered they could help other souls move on, but now there is another objective- to defeat Hades once and for all. I also love that Killian says “Emma and I” displaying the  equality between them and how he continues to see them as quite the team. No matter what they do, they do it together, whether it’s fighting an evil snowman or defeating an immortal God. He says it so matter of fact as well. He believes they will succeed because of his faith and Emma, and the faith he is beginning to have in himself.

It’s such a pretty ship:

pretty ship.gif

(X)

There was something so endearing about Killian calling The Jewel of the Realm, later the Jolly Roger, “pretty.” It reflects his innocence and inherent sweetness that is part of his character. It was love at first sight for him and the ship became a symbol of freedom so many times – first from servitude, then from correction. It makes the fact that he gave her up even more meaningful, as he truly did give up what had been a source of freedom for hundreds of years. But giving up the Jolly Roger he did not shirk him of that freedom. Instead it freed him from his loneliness and heartbreak and he would make the same choice again and again if it meant a chance to be with Emma.

Henry as the author and his love for Family:

I so look forward to seeing Henry work as author, especially now that he wants to use his power the right way. But I was really touched by two specific things they chose to have Henry focus on when he spoke to the Apprentice about his feeling of hopelessness to stop certain things.

henry1.gifhnery1.gif

(X)

It’s not surprising that he feel that way about his mom, but seeing the steady development of affection Henry has for Killian is really heartwarming. Beyond just wanting to see his mother happy, he now really cares about him and it’s lovely. We went from him not being sure about his mom dating him, to being taught to sail, to going on adventures to save Emma, to Henry watching Killian die, completely devastated. And he may be experiencing growing pains that all teenagers go through, but he loves his family-  all of them and that now includes not only Emma, Snow, David, Regina and Robin but also Killian.

Flashbacks of the Brothers Jones:

bros.gif

(X)

What I loved about these flashbacks besides being thoroughly engaging and just plain amazing to watch, was how they helped explain Killian and Liam’s characters. Killian’s behavior especially makes pristine sense, even more so than before. In “Swan Song” we saw Killian as a child look up to his father, wanting to be just like him. Hours later he abandons his sons and sells them into servitude. Given how much he looked up to his father it’s only natural Liam tried to be this good and honorable man, to inspire and his younger brother and always forgive him his vices. He never wanted to abandon him like their father did. Moreover, after they are the only survivors of their crew, Liam knowing why, Killian simply grateful for his brothers heroism, their straight-laced way of life – the good form, never indulging in alcohol, longing for a heroes journey and goodness for their family lineage- is even more understandable.

Where was Robin:

Robin’s absence from this episode was the one glaring flaw because it may know sense. Where was he? He should’ve been right alongside everyone else in the loft and the quest to the Apprentice’s house, unlike Gold who we know is in his shop. I’ve been longing for more screen time for him and being completely missing from this episode fell off. There should have been at the very least a single line explaining where he was.

More Liam Jones and missed opportunities:

The only other missed opportunity for this episode was not having a scene between David and Liam. They are definitely similar, and the way Killian and David bonded in “Good Form” over talking about him, it’s a shame they didn’t have a scene together. Moreover, I know Liam’s character has moved on, but two episodes is not enough. My love of pirate and nautical stories withstanding, Killian could always use more back stories, so we definitely need to see Liam again in flashbacks.

A Beautiful Video:

I love to highlight talent in the fandom, and this video by XxMitikaSanaxX is so stunning. I think it highlights their journey and bring some parallels to Liam so amazingly so. It’s so well done, I believe it could make a non-viewer want to watch the show and instantly make them fall him up with Emma and Killian’s story.

Captain Swan & More Further Thoughts on “Devil’s Due” and Beyond

This first edition of “Further Thoughts” for 5B is a little bit different as it will be an amalgam of many things. First off, there are some things that I didn’t have the proper space to discuss in my Nerd Machine review. Second, there were a few sections from that review I wanted to elaborate on with visual references. Third, which is something different, I’m speculating and theorizing on a few things. Lastly, before this half of the season began, ABC released some truly beautiful videos that I wanted to relive. Spoilers/speculation ahead so be fair warned.

-Emma and Killian’s House looks like Emma’s Nursery:

When I first watched the episode, I thought the fact that part of Emma’s nursery was in her and Killian’s house in the Underworld was really intriguing. At first I thought it was merely a reflection of Emma’s lost childhood. She never got to experience what her parents had planned for her so her nursery’s purpose was never fulfilled and has unfinished business. And while I still believe that is part of it, when I saw the episode stills and script tease for “The Brothers Jones,” it was confirmed in my mind that this nursery has multiple meanings.

5x15f

cs script

5x15k

This house was a representation of Emma and Killian’s future, so when he died that future and all its possibilities – including a family – perished as well. Whether it is something they discuss on screen in this upcoming episode or not, there is a specific point in the script to have Killian look at the nursery. In fact, the house is filled with child’s toys surrounding them in the living room and the kitchen. They are surrounded by representations of the family they could have. Perhaps this even means the family they are meant to have and will one day when his life is restored, because a life filled with love, and the product of that love, could very well be Killian’s unfinished business. This house and that future is theirs.

-True Love is Always Felt:

One of the most beautiful things Once Upon a Time has always emphasized is that true love is felt across barriers and realms. That love you feel can manifest in physical ways as if your heart and souls are truly connected. I spoke about this in my review.

“When you truly love someone, no distance or obstacle can ever sever that bond. There’s a profound connection between souls that can be felt in inexplicable ways. Killian knew that it was truly Emma who’d come for him because when you love someone you just know, and when they approach where Killian is being held, Emma clutches his ring, and a feeling of certainty comes over her. He is close. She can feel it.” – Expert from my review at The Nerd Machine

cs love felt

cs love felt1.gif

(X) (X)

What I love is that this not only further establishes Emma and Killian’s love as being one that is so deep that it just fell on a spiritual level, but also that it parallels them, once again, to the show’s other epic love story – that of her parents Snow and Charming. When Snow ate the poison apple Charming could feel it. This is the parallel I dreamed of seeing because it’s poignant and beautiful and I’m so happy that Emma has found someone to share such a similar and profound connection with.

-Beautiful Symbolism:

I discussed in my review the exquisite symbolism of Emma rescuing Killian from falling into the River of Lost Souls. They were two people who were indeed lonely, lost souls until love brought light back into their lives. And Emma is definitely the light in Killian’s life. I am just astounded at this visual of the light of appearing on his face, combined with that look of love and adoration. Bravo to director Alrick Riley and director of photography Stephen Jackson for visually capturing such a beautifully significant, symbolic moment.

“But what was so stunning was the first look he gives her was one of relief, joy, and amazement. As she cradles his face that is bathed in darkness, suddenly the light appears on the single eye he can gaze upon her with. Light, and love, had returned to him, because Emma is the light in his life.”- Expert from my review at The Nerd Machine

-Part of the Charming Family:

One of the things I’ve wanted to see this season was Snow and David acknowledge and call Killian family. While that is still verbally yet to happen, much of what they are saying and doing shows that they do consider him family, and someone that will help with open arms. From David always staying on track with their mission of saving him, to Snow calling him a friend, it has been so wonderful to see this development. But the moment in “Devil’s Due” when they arrive to see him safe, David a beaming smile on his face, and Snow calling him by his name, showing sweet, genuine concern for his physical state like a mother, was so lovely and heartwarming. Now if only we could see one or both of them give their future son-in-law a hug!

-Regina and Snow Come Full Circle:

Something I did not have space to discuss in my review what a lovely moments between Regina and Snow where we truly see them come full circle in their relationship. The show began because Regina could not forgive Snow for Daniel’s death. But now so much has changed and I thought it was touching that it was the two of them that found Daniel’s grave together, happy to see that he’d moved on. The two of them are in a better place with each other so it’s fitting that Daniel is too. While at first the scene where Regina helped an ailing  horse seemed random, I realized it was about bringing these characters full circle. Not only that Regina could show mercy and aid the animal she loves dearly and brought her so much joy when she was younger, but also to mirror where Snow and Regina first began, because when they first met Regina saved Snow on a runaway horse. We know things did not go well after this, but they’ve come back around and they are back to that sincere affection they felt when they first met.

-Cruella is Fabulous, Darling:

I don’t have much to say except that I love, love, love Victoria Smurift’s depiction of Cruella. From her voice, dry wit, and demeanor she is absolutely fabulous. And I laughed for days at this image.

-What’s Next for The Jones Brothers and Emma:

While I try not to speculate too much, when a highly anticipated episode is approaching I cannot help it and “The Brothers Jones” is sure to be a spectacular one. If you are curious about how I see things playing out look no further than anything written by qqueenofhades and hooks-and-feathers as I pretty much agree with their theories. But I also want to express my own thoughts and excitement, and build upon what they said. Let’s first look at the sneak peek for the episode.

jones brothers 2.gif

jones brother 3

(X)

It seems as if Liam looks uncomfortable at his brother’s praise of him and while I could play out in many ways, I suspect Emma’s lie detector is going off and she can sense that something is off. I do not believe Liam’s is a bad person, nor do I think he is wrong to be protective of his brother. I also feel for Emma because she knows how much Killian loves his brother. And therein lies the drama – drama that I believe will be resolved in moving ways. Besides Emma, there is no one Killian admires and loves it as much as Liam. He always says he is a far better man than he is. But like anyone, Liam is not perfect. He is a good but flawed man just like his younger brother.

jones brothers4.gifjones brothers5

(X) (X)

In “Good Form” Liam says he should’ve listened to Killian. He was stubborn and suffered because of it. Perhaps Liam’s unfinished business is to listen to his brother, truly, and see that he is happy. This is something Killian has to learn as well. That his brother can be someone to admire but not because he’s this perfect being incapable of making a mistake, but because he can overcome them. And if there is a moment where Killian must make a choice between moving on brother or staying with Emma, as I suspect there will be, I will surely lose it. And Killian should not be thought of any less of for it. He has lived a long life, suffered so much pain and loss, and now has been mercilessly tortured. He’s broken. He’s tired. Considering moving on, even for a moment, doesn’t mean he loves Emma any less. He was ready to die when his wound from Excalibur opened. He was just happy knowing Emma would have a future.  And he would never abandon her unless he felt she would be okay and happy. But this all has to be his choice. She has to give him the choice and be willing to let him go. Because deep down we know neither really wants to do that. They want to hold onto each other. What’s important is that it has to be their individual choices to do so. I just hope Liam moves on, reconciles any hard feelings with Emma, and Killian can see his brother at peace.

-Is Hades Threatened by Emma and Killian’s Love?

I wondered why Hades has been torturing Killian so severely even before our heroes arrived, and why he seems so hell-bent on punishing them, beyond the fact that they brought hope to the Underworld. I have a feeling that the true love between Emma and Killian is a great threat to Hades. Adam and Eddy hinted that Killian is a special soul to Hades, and we’ve seen how powerful Emma’s expressed true love can be when her True Love’s Kiss with Henry broke the curse in season one. Can you imagine how powerful the romantic true love for Emma could be? She is the Savior and I’ve always believed that Killian’s character was meant for great things. It’s why the characters were written as such an epic love story. True love is the most powerful magic of all and I truly believe that Emma and Killian’s love is meant to vanquish darkness.

-Go The Distance:

I love the movie Hercules especially the song “Go the Distance.” When I heard they were to do and Underworld arc I was so delighted. But when I really looked at the lyrics to the song, I was so amazed how much they could be related to Emma and Killian’s characters and relationship. Tell me this does not feel so reminiscent of them.

I have often dreamed of a far off place
Where a hero’s welcome would be waiting for me
Where the crowds will cheer when they see my face
And a voice keeps saying, this is where I’m meant to be I’ll be there someday, I can go the distance
I will find my way if I can be strong
I know every mile, will be worth my while
When I go the distance, I’ll be right where I belong
Down an unknown road to embrace my fate
Though that road may wander, it will lead me to you
And a thousand years would be worth the wait
It might take a lifetime but somehow I’ll see it throughAnd I won’t look back, I can go the distance
And I’ll stay on track, no, I won’t accept defeat
It’s an uphill slope but I won’t lose hope
‘Til I go the distance, and my journey is complete

But to look beyond the glory is the hardest part
For a hero’s strength is measured by his heart

Like a shooting star, I will go the distance
I will search the world, I will face its harms
I don’t care how far, I can go the distance
‘Til I find my hero’s welcome, waiting in your arms

I will search the world, I will face its harms
‘Til I find my hero’s welcome, waiting in your arms

And in “Devil’s Due” they are both heroes in back in each other’s arms.

I also wonder how often we are going to apply this quote to this arc?

-Reliving Beauty:

During the night of the 100th episode celebration, ABC released this truly breathtaking video that relives the 100 heroes, villains, lands, adventure, and love in the first 100 episodes. Watching it I was brought to tears and left in awe. It’s videos like this that really demonstrate how remarkable Once Upon a Time really is. It’s a special show and it has changed my life.

“100 Episodes of Once upon a Time”

This next video highlighted the beautiful and epic love story between Emma and Killian and I once again was brought to tears as their most significant moments (and many of my favorite ones) are highlighted to showcase the depth, brevity, and specialness of their love story. What is touching was what was said about their story “They are each other’s happy ending. Their love has lasted through it all…until now.” And then it asks “Will there love survive?” On a show like Once Upon a Time you do not pose a question like this unless the answer is yes. Of course their love can survive. True love after all can survive any distance or obstacle put in its path. Not even death can stop true love. The question is not if, but how. How will Emma and Killian’s love overcome this? The story is not yet complete, but this next chapter of my favorite fairy tale will no doubt prove that love can conquer all.

“Once Upon a Love Story: Emma & Hook”

Once Upon a Time 100th Episode Celebration: Top 5 Best Season 5A Episodes & More Further Thoughts

season 5

The first half of Season 5 of Once Upon a Time was one of the most extraordinary the series has ever seen. Compelling and truly moving storytelling at its finest, the choice to turn your heroine into the “villain” was brave and bold. But of course, things are not always what they seemed and Emma’s journey, though fraught with darkness and mistakes, was really about love, and the ways in which the story unfolded with the unexpected twist that Killian was also a Dark One was amazing. Her love story was finally brought into focus after her other relationships had been established firmly and it was glorious. But that is not to say, the season solely rested on their shoulders. With so many overarching themes and moments for every character, Season 5A was rich with romance, heartbreak, wonderful new and returning characters, and exquisite new real in Camelot,  and remarkable performances. With half of the season now concluded let us revisit the best moments so far.

1. “Birth” (Season 5, Episode 8)

Absolutely heart wrenching, fast-paced, intense, and filled with outstanding performances, “Birth” is the type of remarkable episode that makes you believe in television’s ability to move you deeply. The pinnacle episode of the “Dark Swan” arc, the truth behind Emma’s motivations was finally revealed – but this truth was even more devastating than we could have possibly imagined. Between the flashbacks in Camelot and the present day in Storybrooke, things were intense and the stakes were never higher. Of course what Once Upon a Time does so well is parallel the past and present and when it does it spectacularly we are left in awe, especially when each twist is more shocking than the next. “Birth” seemed to be a reference to Zelena giving birth, but it was also an allusion to the birth of a second Dark One in Killian, finding out the captain had been cursed the entire time, and by Emma in order to save his life. It was something I did not see coming at all. This episode had everything that makes this show so wonderful: levity in the form of Dr. Whale’s return, excitement and inspiration in the scene where Merlin and Emma face off in an unwitting duel of the greatest magic ever, heartwarming moments in Henry revealing a plan he and Killian had devised called “Operation Light Swan,” a house in Storybrooke that represented the promise of a future together, romantic scenes of Emma and Killian most especially their kiss igniting the Promethean flame as Emma was ready to begin that future and give up the darkness, and lastly family drama as all our heroes surround Killian as he laid dying, telling Emma not to be hasty in her actions, and Emma angry and desperate refusing to let the man she loves die. The scene where Emma transports her and Killian into the field of Middlemist flowers was as powerful a moment as we’ve ever seen. This episode proves the lengths we go to for love in a way so gripping and heart-wrenching that it is destined to stay with many viewers for years to come.

2. “Swan Song” (Season 5, Episode 11)

Rivaling the most emotional and heartbreaking episodes of the series, what makes “Swan Song” so special is the power in its emotion. It stems from deep inside of us and taps into issues of abandonment, betrayal, forgiveness, and true love. Our hearts were broken right along with Emma’s seeing Killian completely overtaken by the darkness, and when her entire family is marked for death to go to the Underworld they’re forced to make difficult decisions. Her family doesn’t want to give up but also doesn’t want to spend their final moments fraught with worry pouring over books, but rather sharing a meal together at Granny’s enjoying a happy moment together, while Emma, being the noble and brave woman she is, decides to channel all of the darkness into herself and make the ultimate sacrifice for her loved ones. Once upon a Time is built on the idea that love is often self sacrificial and that redemption and forgiveness is always possible. “Swan Song” beautifully exemplifies this in the contrast between Killian’s flashbacks and his present struggles as the Dark One. Little by little we’ve learned about Killian’s past and not only do we see another piece of the puzzle, but this also brought the “Dark Swan” arc to it’s stunning and gripping conclusion. Abandoned by a father he adored,  and sold into servitude, only to find his father alive centuries later, he was willing to forgive him until he learns that he’d had another son and named him Liam as if he was replacing his older brother. The fact that he kills his father was tragic but every circumstance of his past explained his actions in the present especially when he remembers the wise advice from his father – it’s never too late to change. And Killian becomes the man he wants to be – a good, heroic man, making up for his weakness by being strong, and fighting back against the greatest evil by channeling all the darkness into Excalibur asking Emma to kill him. Neither want to lose the other but they must let go – they must sacrifice their happy ending in order to save everyone else and it was the most heartbreaking moment of the series, but also one of the most beautiful as the couple proves that True Love is indeed stronger than darkness. Killian loses his life but Emma, who learns that Gold has betrayed them again by becoming the Dark One once more, finds hope once again, proving to be more determined and stronger than she’s ever been, vowing to march into the Underworld to share her heart with Killian and bring him back home. As we hear those final words of Emma’s, “Hook I will find you. I will always find you,” we are brought back to the heart of the series and the moving theme that we’ve witnessed since day one: no matter the distance or obstacle you will always find your true love. And Emma embracing her family’s steadfast motto is as beautiful moment as we’ve ever seen.

3. “The Broken Kingdom” (Season 5, Episode 4)

An episode filled with fairy tale romance, intrigue, subterfuge, and one of the most beautiful visuals in television history, this episode was key in establishing the truth in the heart of Camelot characters, as well as Snow and Charming and Emma and Killian. The timeless theme that power can corrupt someone was potently expressed in the flashbacks to Arthur, Guinevere and Lancelot. The most famous of triangle history was wonderful as this was a new depiction of a woman who loves her husband but seeing his obsession to make Excalibur whole turn him into a madman, led her heart elsewhere. It was what made the sincere connection she makes was Lancelot so lovely, and the moment that Arthur betrays her trust by taking away her agency with the Sands of Avalon even more tragic. Seeing that all of Camelot is a complete illusion – that in truth it’s still a broken kingdom that at any moment can be shattered was not only unexpected and intriguing storytelling but a moving parallel to what our characters were experiencing in Camelot’s present. Snow and Charming working together, while in a very real argument with each other, proved that no fancy title could come between them, break the trust that exists, nor break their resolve to do anything to save their daughter. Emma and Killian also proved that the darkness that is plaguing Emma could not break their bond, nor Killian’s resolve to fight for their future of a “white picket fence life” in Storybrooke. After a horse ride that got her heart racing, Killian leads her into a field of pink blossoms and when she realizes the dark voice in her head had disappeared the two share a kiss as the camera pans about them in the most breathtakingly beautiful scene ever. It was a symbolic and exquisite moment of idyllic fairy tale beauty that demonstrated what Once epitomizes. Through trust and vulnerability, true love can slowly blossom, and through hope and belief in each other, even the greatest darkness can be vanquished.

4. “Nimue” (Season 5, Episode 7)

Extraordinary in its meaning, significant in its mythology, and filled with staggering performances “Nimue” told the backstory of Merlin and his true love, which portrayed the origins of the Middlemist flowers which had become a symbol of love for the season, as well as the full story of how the first Dark One came to be. Itt was born from the Holy Grail and became a weapon of evil when vengeance and an evil act by Nimue destroyed what Merlin hoped Excalibur would do – cut his immortal ties so he could live a single life with the woman he loves. Their relationship and their characters were meant to showcase the exquisite themes that Once has always showcased and ones that we could all learn from, as well as contrast how their failures would not be repeated in the present. Although eventually some mistakes were indeed repeated, in “Nimue” we see just how far Emma has come not only in her journey as the Dark Swan but indeed her journey since day one. We see her happier than ever in the scene where Killian gives her his brother’s ring as a sign of his love, asking her to promise to return home to him, made beautiful because it was the first time he told her he loved her. And we also see Emma as strong as we’ve ever seen when she fights back against Nimue who tries to make her give into the darkness and not go back to being nothing. In an extraordinary moment Emma exclaims “I am not nothing! I was never nothing! “which for a woman who lived a life feeling unloved and insignificant is an astounding revelation that anyone who has had moments of despair could find help from. Most especially, this wonderful episode shows us that life is made of precious moments all of which should be cherished and that one lifetime of moments is far grander than an endless sea of a everlasting ones. As our heroes break into Camelot to obtain Excalibur only to be captured and for the very worst to happen, the story is perpetuated to an exciting, intense conclusion leaving us wanting the next chapter with even more anticipation.

5. “The Price” (Season 5, Episode 2)

After a brilliant introduction (“The Dark Swan” would’ve been next on the list), the second episode of the season was a gem of beautiful romantic grandeur, moments of family and romantic love, and melancholy and moving sadness with a tinge of hope and anticipation for the rest of the arc. The ball at Camelot with an exquisite gift wrapped in golden brocade, wistful dances, and radiant smiles from Snow and Charming beaming at Henry experiencing his first crush, to Robin in Regina so happy and lost in each other that they forget their next steps, and Emma and Killian looking as if they were attending their own wedding. The ball was a lovely and light part of the episode. It was a perfect balance to the pathos of the episode which included Regina’s desperation to save Robin in the past, to her doubting her ability to inspire anyone’s belief, and then her brave offering of her own life in place of his when a fury from the Underworld comes to claim him. This moment was a big step for her character and when the others join alongside her, they demonstrated the strength of familial bonds even if it’s not by blood, and belief that we can succeed with the power of teamwork. It was the perfect way of foreshadowing the way the characters would come together at the end of the season for Emma and Killian. Speaking of the couple, they provided the melancholy of episode from the concern, to the devastation of failed true love kisses. to the feeling of isolation, while in the end we are still left with the hope that he won’t give up on her  because True Love never gives up on each other.

Hands and Hearts Entwined continued:
Before season 5 began I wrote an article that discussed the emphasis that Emma and Killian’s story has had with hands and hearts entwined. I expected it to continue because it had been there since the beginning. But little did I imagine how much emphasis we would see in 5A. The emphasis was seemingly in overdrive from the first episode from the amount of close-ups of their hands entwined, to how much we saw them holding hands, to the number of heart references and plot points, it was not even close to being subtle. Wondering early on if perhaps Emma and Killian were sharing a heart thinking that was how the curse was cast, these predictions were not accurate, but simply premature. For in the final episode we see Emma’s plan to share her heart with Killian to bring back him to life and save him in the underworld. What is beautiful is that this is far more exquisite and poignant than what we originally predicted. Instead of sharing a heart to cast a dark curse, with dark magic, we could see them sharing a heart with light magic – with true love. And whether they end up sharing a heart, the fact that Emma wants to and believes it will work shows just how far she has come. From someone who had completely closed off her heart to a woman now who believes in the love she and Killian have so deeply that she believes he can come overcome everything, even death. No matter what their hearts truly beat as one.

Paralleled Love Stories:

Before the season began I loved what Josh Dallas said in the season 5 special about the ways Snow and David have paralleled Emma and Killian They are similar but different.

josh captain swan1.gif

(x)

Of course we did not know we’d see the ultimate parallel – a heartbreaking one where one had to kill the other. In season 3 we saw Snow crush Charming’s heart to cast the curse and it was heart wrenching. But I would say seeing Emma stab Killian was perhaps even more heartbreaking and painful. Of Course we knew that Charming was okay because he was alive in Storybrooke. But also, taking that out of account, just examining their feelings in this situation, Snow losing David was devastating for her, but they had lived a life together (short but still substantial), but also Snow was pregnant and a symbol of their love would live on in another person. As Charming said she would be able to see him live on every time she looks into their child’s eyes. But Emma and Killian had no such things. They were together but a joint future was still just an unlived dream. And that is why it’s more heartbreaking – an unlived life, and the things they never got to do would forever haunt Emma. Luckily, she will find a way to save their future together.

Minor quibbles:
In a remarkable season perhaps the only flaws were with the inclusion or lack thereof of certain characters. I really hope there is more Robin Hood soon because I adore his character. And while the characters and storylines were objectively on their own enjoyable, Merida and by extension Ruby and Mulan, were inserted with no real connection to the overall story, so I hope however they are brought back is more inclusive and connected. I will say, while Merida was good in her scenes in “The Dark Swan” and in Storybrooke, having two episodes of her backstory felt wasteful and it would have been better to have seen a bit more of Merlin or Lancelot who had more bearing into the main storyline. And I will be sad if Ruby never returns to Storybrooke because I found it sad and hard to believe that she would really leave Granny and all her friends forever. But these were just minor flaws in a spectacular arc.

A New Kind of Expression:
There was something about Jennifer Morrison’s performance in the scene in “Swan Song ” when she finds out about Gold’s betrayal. The expression on Emma’s face – the anger, disdain, and strength- was amazing! There was just something about that look in her eyes and tone in her voice that Morrison expressed so brilliantly. We’ve never seen her like this. But she has never been in this position before. It just further shows how our characters continue to display new layers and evolve. It’s fantastic!

A Look of Encouragement:
The look Snow and David give Emma before she steps onto the lake at the end of “Swan Song” was so meaningful. That little nod of encouragement shows the support for their daughter and it is exactly what she needed at that moment. It was a sign of hope that they truly believe they will succeed.

Finding Each Other:

Since the “Pilot” the beautiful theme we’ve seen more than any other is that no matter the insurmountable obstacles, love can always be found. Having become synonymous with the series and all for which it stands for, Once Upon a Time’s most iconic quote “I will always find you” was spoken within the first few moments of the show when Prince Charming awoke Snow White from a sleeping curse with True Love’s Kiss, while Snow White’s first-line spoken on-screen was “You found me.” This lovely motif was established instantly within the story and while some may attribute it to simply being associated with Snow and Charming, it is actually the belief of the Charming family, and indeed is the heart of the series. We saw that not even a dark curse or memory loss could erase this belief. It is still residing within Mary Margaret’s heart as she implores this to her students in the very first episode.

snow,findyou

That belief in love both romantic and familial is what drives our story and gives it its beauty and pathos. It is what motivates our characters when faced with the darkest of times and moments of hopelessness or despair. The “Pilot” made this pristinely clear. When Henry was feeling isolated he found Emma in Boston. When Snow was under an evil spell, Charming found and awakened her. And when the dark curse was nearly upon them, Charming kissed his newborn daughter Emma and placed her inside the magical wardrobe and said “Find Us.” And that is what she did with the help of her son Henry. It’s why Snow’s first line after the curse is broken “You found us” is so moving and meaningful. They will always find each other and when they do it awakens their hearts, their souls, and their true selves. Henry finding Emma in Boston awakened her from her lonely life where she was an orphan without a family or belief in happy endings. When Emma broke Storybooke’s curse with True Love’s Kiss, she awakened the town from its 28 year sleep, memories of their true selves being restored. For Emma, her heart was truly awakening, first opening up to her son and then to her parents. And when she meets Captain Hook her heart truly awakens to romantic love for the first time in over 10 years. She is the one who finds him laying amongst Cora’s victims and they’ve continued to find each other again and again, no matter the place and no matter the time. Much like Henry finding her in Boston, when Killian finds Emma in New York City he awakens her from her sleep of a false life, restoring her memories and bringing her back home. He found her despite the odds proving that love will always do so. And so we’ve arrived at the middle of season five, which ends with Emma speaking those iconic words for her beloved, ready to march into the Underworld to find and save him. This is so incredibly special, moving and tremendously beautiful as it solidifies that steadfast belief of her family. She has now come to embody this unfailing faith that her parents, her son and indeed the man she loves have shown her countless times. She learned how to be a hero and how to hope even in times of despair. It’s why she smiles and cries saying “I knew you’d find me” when Henry finds her in the alternate universe. She believes her family will always find her and now she’s demonstrating that faith in the darkest time imaginable. Her vow to find Killian not only solidifies him as part of her family and her truelove, but also beautifully showcases that next step in Emma Swan’s  and indeed Once Upon a Time’s exquisite journey, bringing her character and the show full circle with tremendous meaning. And her strength and resolve in this moment is unparalleled. Her family has found her, she has found her family. Her heart awakened from its long sleep when she fell in love with Killian and now she is going to find him, share the heart that he was able to bring back to life, awaken his soul from its sleeping death, and prove once again that true love will always find you.

2015 Year in Review: Best Television Relationships

First of all, I wanted to thank all of you for making the first year at The Girly Nerd so special. Granted it has not been around for a year, but I wanted to follow in the footsteps of my fellow wonderful writers and venture into discussing what were some of the Bests of 2015. To begin with are the Best Relationships of the year. Because I do not watch quite as many shows as some, and because I think many different kinds of relationships deserve to be praised, this list not only features romantic couples, but also friendships and familial relationships. I also decided to just do one per show, but I make up for it in the Honorable Mentions. So without further ado, here are the relationships that made 2015 enthralling, beautiful and moving.

1. Emma Swan and Killian Jones (Once Upon a Time)

cs

Emma and Killian’s relationship has always been beautiful, captivating and relatable, having developed naturally and steadily over the past 4 seasons. But 2015 brought their relationship to a deeply profound level as we saw two people who were once so lost and broken find a love so true that their wounded hearts are now willing to be completely open and vulnerable. It has been evident for quite some time how much Killian loves Emma, and this year we saw in abundance just how much she truly loves him.  Kindred spirits in every way, they have a deep understanding of one another and the ability to provide comfort, unfailing support, and passionate affection to each other. In this year alone we witnessed Killian telling Emma she is his happy ending, romantic walks, heartfelt promises, adventures in an alternate reality, first declarations of love, the bestowing of a precious ring, and the choosing of a house that represents their future together, as well kisses amongst hundreds of flowers, their names residing next to each other on a blade that was once the Holy Grail, and a love that literally ignited the first spark of mankind. Contrasted with romantic and light moments were also ones of tragedy, heartbreak and sacrifice, bringing their love story this year to epic proportions. With darkness thrust upon them, they both became Dark Ones, and we saw how they are able to chase away that darkness when reminded of  their love, trust and belief in each other. And even when they faltered with Emma nearly crushing a heart, saving Killian’s life by turning him into a Dark One and then not being honest with him, and Killian letting the darkness consume him in a quest for revenge, they were able to be brought back to the light, solidifying moving truths about their characters individually and as couple. Emma was able to let him go and vow to save him with love, not darkness, and Killian nobly sacrificed himself to save Emma and her family, destroying the darkness within themselves, and believing they were vanquishing that evil forever. Even though that latter was in vain, the sacrifice was not because it epitomized what makes their story so beautiful.  Through love they have been able to overcome their metaphorically demons, and now they were able to overcome physical ones- and they did so together. Tragic as this was, doesn’t that make it all the more special? Emma is now marching into the Underworld to save his life. Willing to go to Hell and back and share her heart with him, their story is as romantically epic as one can be. In 2015, Emma and Killian literally defeated a dragon together, and overcame the greatest darkness that ever was. Killian sacrificed himself twice for Emma and her future, and Emma is marching into the Underworld to save him proclaiming her family’s motto “I will always find you.” There are many moving and beautiful love stories, but the one between Emma Swan and Killian Jones is the kind of story that fairy tale dreams are made of.

2. Peggy Carter and Edwin Jarvis (Agent Carter)

agent

From the moment these two characters met I knew I would love their relationship. From the mutual respect and witty banter, to the way they make a perfect team, Peggy and Jarvis are the indeed heart of the Marvel series. What I love most is that it is a relationship that is completely platonic. They obviously have a great connection, ability to work well together, and affection for each other, but prove that not every relationship is meant to be romantic. Instead we see the importance and beauty that friendship can have. Every scene between these two is golden, whether they be serious or light, and help to bring a real sense of gravity to the show.  They spent this first season in a variant of situations: suspended in the air, handcuffed together, in car chases, preparing to break through a window with a table (a classic one) and countless intrigues and moments of hilarious subterfuge, each utterly engaging, exciting and even moving. For a character that felt invisible at work, Jarvis gives Peggy the respect and sense of equal footing she deserves, and there is no greater sense of respect and trust on the series than between these two characters. Perhaps the most touching moment was when Jarvis revealed that he lied to his boss Howard Stark about the whereabouts of Steve Rogers’ blood, bestowing the vile to Peggy because she is one person in the world who knows what to do which such a gift. It was a beautiful moment and epitomized the loveliness of a friendship based on sincere kindness, esteem and integrity.

3. Ross Poldark and Demelza Carne (Poldark)

poldark6

There is something so special about period drama romance and couples, especially unlikely ones between people of different stations in life. Nowadays we are used to these kinds of relationships, so there needs to be something that makes them stand apart from the others. Ross and Demelza surely fit the bill. They are beautiful, sexy, and truly touching as their story developed over the first season of this stunning series. He rescued her from abuse and she became his kitchen maid but it was not long before we could see how much she adored him, and the growing attraction between them culminated in one of the sexiest scenes of the year as they succumb to that attraction as he helps her out of a gown. Beyond that attraction their love grew into something very deep and profound. On Christmas she sings a song and in that moment we saw the moment Ross realized how much he had fallen in love with her. It was sweet and tear inducing and laid the foundation for the love that grew deeper and deeper from that moment on with such swoon worthy lines such as “Come back to me my love.” She helped him to be a better man and he helped her come of her shell and become more confident, as they dealt with joys and blessings, hardships and tragedies. Their season ends with heartbreak as they lose their first child and Ross is arrested for a crime for which he is innocent, but we are still left with a sense of hope that they can overcome anything together.

4. Kevin Ryan and Javier Esposito (Castle)

castle2

The partnership between detectives Ryan and Esposito has always been one of the best things about Castle and in 2015 we saw how much this relationship means to them, and indeed everyone on the show. It has always been the case with these characters, but this year especially solidified the importance of this type of relationship. They are more than just friends. They are partners. They are brothers. I don’t pretend to be an expert on police proceedings and dynamics but I do know that the relationship between partners is one of utmost importance. The best not only get along but know each other as well as spouses and family members. They always have each other’s back and are willing to risk their life for the other. Ryan and Esposito most definitely fall under all of these categories and what was special this year was that as they were struggling with feelings of resentment and anger, they were able to work through these conflicts and realize how much they mean to each other. When they both took the sergeants exam only Esposito passed, and then Ryan accidentally shot his partner. Of course things were tense after these events but when Ryan saved Esposito’s life, taking a bullet for his partner, they could see how petty they were being. You know things are serious when they use each other’s first names and in these moments that concluded 2015, we Javier is so grateful for his partner Kevin who took a bullet for him even though Kevin has a wife, a child, and another on the way. They are family and nothing will ever change that. And of course I would be remiss if I failed to mention how many laugh out loud moments these detectives also provided the show in 2015 especially a dance routine choreographed to Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” resulting in one of the best moments of the series. In truth we are the lucky ones whenever these two grace our screens!

5. Henry and Abraham Morgan (Forever)

forever3

Even though this wonderful, enthralling show is no longer on the air, it did conclude its first and only season in 2015, and this relationship just had to be included. Certainly one of the most unique shows ever, this relationship is unlike any we have ever seen. It is a father and a son relationship between an immortal man and a son who is now much older than his Dad. Adopted by Henry and his wife as a baby and survivor of the Holocaust, Abraham is the only living person (besides the show’s nefarious villain and other immortal) that knew Henry’s secret and their dynamic provided much of the lightness and humor but also very moving moments of the series. The relationship between father and son is always complex and complicated and indeed giving their circumstances Henry and Abraham’s certainly is, but what was lovely was that despite this you never once doubt how much they love each other and will do anything to protect one another. When Abraham began looking into his heritage it was moving to hear him say that he “does not need a family tree to know who is Pops is.” Of course when they found out that they are in truth distantly related, they were elated and began seeing a family resemblance between them. It was a moment that expressed that some people are truly meant to be a part of our lives. For a man that lives forever, the love between Henry and his son Abraham is more precious that those countless years without him.

6. Leslie Knope and Ben Wyatt (Parks and Recreation)

From the moment these two adorable, intelligent nerds came together, our hearts and our television screens were made brighter. It is a privilege to watch comedy at its finest as well as a story that presents two people who love and respect each other as much as Leslie and Ben do. It was bittersweet to say goodbye to this delightful show, but in its 7th and final season, this couple continued to shine as one of the best on television. From their hilarious banter and ways they find each other sexy, to them breaking down gender and workplace stereotypes with absolute and refreshing truths, to the ways they continue to show each other unfailing support in their political careers, Leslie and Ben showcased a relationship we all can aspire to. In the final episode of the series they both planned to run for office and decided to flip and coin to see who would do so. Ben won but as they announce the news to their friends Ben proclaims that Leslie is running and the knowing look between them was beautiful. He knew how much it meant to her and so it was an easy decision. As they fast forward many years into the future it is alluded that one of them is President. Which one was uncertain, but it does not matter because we know that whoever it is, the love, high esteem and support for each other has not faltered one bit. Who wouldn’t want a love like Leslie and Ben.

7. Patrick Jane and Teresa Lisbon (The Mentalist)

mentalist5

It took 7 seasons, but in the crime drama’s final bow, the unlikely partners of Jane and Lisbon finally became an official couple and we could not have been happier. Having gone through so much together, the best part of the final moments of the series were the ones that showed how two people who were very guarded and lost so much could find a sense of solace and peace with each other. They will always protect each other, and we now know they will always love each other. With the threat of Red John no longer plaguing them, there were still those who threatened their new relationship. An even though they struggled with moments of trust, in the end it was clear that they belong together. Patrick and Teresa finally learned to let go of their pasts and vowed to always look on the bright side of things. Smiles were rare for them but in the last episode we saw them happier than we ever had. As the two were wed and Lisbon revealed that she was pregnant in a quiet moment alone together, their expressions of pure joy were incredibly touching. The show’s final image was of Jane hugging his bride with a smile unlike any we have ever seen from his character. It was a beautiful showcase of the beautiful way that finding that one special person who can make your life better. Cue many, many tears.

8. Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes (Downton Abbey)

downton2

As this wonderful period drama prepares to take its final bow, we must revisit it’s next to last season, also known as the one whether the two very proper head servants to Downtown Abbey finally came together. It was clear they always held in each in high regard, but when the two began looking into buying a cottage together to rent out to travelers and tenants, I could not help but see and hope that these two would finally realize they have true feelings for each other. In the final episode of the season we see the normally all too proper and serious Mr. Carson show a real moment of vulnerability as he assures Mrs. Hughes that he wants to be stuck with her. He proposes marriage and after her initial shock she happily accepts saying she thought he would never ask. We don’t often see love stories from characters like this, but if they are all as realistic and sweet as this one, I say there should be more. But of course Carson and Mrs. Hughes would remain steadfast in our hearts as one of the best relationships from this lovely and captivating series.

9. Scarlett O’Connor and Gunnar Scott (Nashville)

nashville5

I will openly admit that I have not seen every episode of Nashville (although I would love to one day when I can). I came into the series late and one of the first big draws for me was relationship and chemistry between Scarlett and Gunnar. It was clear to me they still cared deeply for each other and frankly belonged together. Although they have spent 2015 in other relationships, two things remain true: their ability to be friends, and the musical magic they make together. Even if it was frustrating when we saw them with other people all was forgiven when they would take the stage together. Moreover, we saw that despite Gunnar’s feelings he was able to let them go for her sake and just be her friend as she was grieving the loss of her mother. He even helped her boyfriend write a song to help her with her sorrow and took no credit  for it. That kind of selflessness was echoed in the year’s final episode when he said they could make the band work even if she wanted to move to Seattle. All that mattered to him was her happiness. We can see that Scarlett wants to find that kind of selflessness in a relationship, and clearly she did not have that with her doctor boyfriend. This was a sign of hope that 2016 may being these crazy kids back together again.

10. Danny Wheeler and Riley Perrin (Baby Daddy)

baby

If there was one word to describe the relationship between these two best friends in 2015 it would be “finally!” It was always clear that despite Danny’s unrequited feelings for Riley and her pining for his younger brother Ben that these two were meant to be. Although it took a long time to get them to this place, when the truths were finally laid out on the table they came together in both a funny and lovely ways. As they both cried watching The Princess Bride claiming this was their favorite movie, Riley watching in tears while boyfriend Ben was asleep and Danny unbeknownst to them a few rows back, also in tears, it was so obvious that this was the fairy tale that was meant to be. Danny always said he wanted to be her Prince Charming and her hero. When they met as children she said he was as he carried her home after she sprained her ankle. It only took 20 years for her to realize that his love was not unrequited. She loved him too and they showed us just how lovely it is when you fall in love with your best friend.

Honorable Mentions:

Killian Jones and Henry Mills (Once Upon a Time)

I could not adore the relationship between Killian and Henry more. This year we saw glimpses of what the step dad and son dynamic would be like for them and it as absolutely delightful. Their adventures together in the Alternate reality warmed my heart as Henry told him he has a great sailing teacher in him and it was so sweet seeing the playful teasing Killian gave the lad when Henry was experiencing his first crush. But the sweetest and most tear inducing moment happened off screen. They two developed a mission together- Operation Light Swan- a project which included finding a house in Storybrooke for Emma and Killian to live in together. It was a promise for the future- a future of love and family that would of course include Henry. This was truly touching as we see just how much Henry has grown to care for her mother’s beau. He looked devastated when Killian sacrificed himself, so it is only natural that he too joins his family in the quest to rescue him. I look forward to 2016 bringing many more Captain Cobra moments as Henrys as already developed a new mission to find and save Killian! Two missions planned and two that will surely succeed because Henry’s operations never fail.

Regina Mills and Robin Hood (Once Upon a Time)

The outlaw and the queen have had to deal with some rough and unusual circumstances this year when she found him in New York City and he realized his wife was actually Regina’s wicked sister Zelena in disguise, now pregnant with his child. Less than ideal circumstances to say the least it did not deter them from wanting to be together nor alter their feelings for each other. In fact they only grew stronger as they dealt with these hard times with maturity and understanding. It was lovely to see light moments together as they shared dances and kisses in Camelot contrasted with a very profound moments when Robin’s life was on the line and Regina offered her own in his place. These soul mates clearly would do anything for each other , solidifying them as another beautiful couple on the show about true love and happy endings.

Leslie Knope and Ron Swanson (Parks and Recreation)

Besides Leslie and Ben without a doubt my favorite relationship on Parks has always been between Leslie and Ron. They could not be more different in political views and personality, but they proved that people who are complete and total opposites can actually be good and true fiends. In this show’s final season it began with a great rift between them. They refused to speak to each other. It wasn’t until their friends locked them in the Parks Department that they were able to work through their differences. It was not only the best episode of the season, but was the epitome of what made their dynamic so wonderful. Of course Leslie was all gun ho from the start and Ron tried his best to resist but in the end we learned why he was so angry. Their lives had changed and people were taken away and it hurt him greatly. It took a great deal to admit it and be vulnerable but that was beauty in it. They show us that not only those with differing opinions can respect each other but also be lifelong friends. It is a fine lesson that is deeply felt.

Once Upon a Time: “Broken Heart” Further Thoughts

heart3

The stakes have never been higher, the drama never so intense, and the pain is as stinging as we have ever seen on Once Upon a Time. When I hoped for a epic season that focused on Emma, especially her romantic relationship, I never dreamed it would turn out this spectacularly. This season has surpassed my wildest dreams, and even though “Broken Heart” was a devastating episode, I still feel nothing bit hope amidst the darkness. I touched on many things in my review for The Nerd Machine so this addition of Further Thoughts will be focused on some little moments, parallels, some speculation, and a reminder of what makes this show and these characters so special

Moments of Truth:

I spoke a great deal about this in my review, but it bears reiterating how powerful Emma and Killian’s moments in Camelot were in this episode. They discussed things we have wanted them to talk about for so long, and laid out emotional truths about their characters and their relationship. When Killian says there has never been a moment where he did not believe in her, or trust her, you see so clearly on her face, she knows the depth of this truth. Emma has always had trouble expressing herself in words, but her expression says it all. She knows how much he believes in her. It is why he is so deeply hurt that she is was not showing him the same belief and trust.

emma sad.gif

(X)

This is why the following scene is even more poignant. She does believe in him and does trust him. That is why she gives him the sword. But it was the pain they have both experienced that really affected me, including some between the two of them. Killian loves Emma more than anything so it is why he has always been so patient with her. He would wait until the ends of time for her. But being willingly patient does not mean it will not hurt. The way Emma pushed him away in Season 3 must have pained him a great deal, and the trauma he went through in season 4 when Rumplestilskin controlled and nearly killed both himself and Emma also left a scar. We assumed they had discussed some of these things off screen, but perhaps not. So seeing these two discuss how much they have gone through with such honesty was a breath of fresh air. He understands why she puts up walls, and she knows he understands that implicitly. He has walls just as high as hers. But he is right. That does not make it fair. Despite the darkness, anger and frustration Emma and Killian needed this. Being honest about how you feel helps the soul heal and can only make your relationship stronger. Hearing them both recognize that Killian has never abandoned her is so imperative. Emma has never had someone who has never failed her, and even though things seem bleak at the moment, I do not expect that to ever change. And Emma will not abandon him either!

Moments of Vulnerability:

When Emma was able to quiet the darkness within Killian the same way he had been able to do so, I was moved to tears, most especially because she was able to do rather quickly. All it took was her looking into his eyes and reminding him that they can have that future together in Storybrooke in that white picket fence house. He just has to want it as she does. When he says he does “More than anything” you can hear how deeply he means these words. His heart is exposed, the anger vanishes, and darkness disappears. These are the kind of moments that make the show so stunning.

The moment Killian cradles Killian face, kisses him, and then rests her head against his cheek will stay with me forever. It s such an exquisitely vulnerable moment and one that exemplifies how deeply she loves him and knows that he loves her. She often expresses her affections through touch rather than words, but here is a beautiful instant where her love is expressed through both. Have we ever seen Emma this vulnerable before? She is in tremendous pain but is not holding back sobs. Instead she is holding the man she loves, with hope and a promise that when he awakens he will be the man he truly is. It may take time, but their future can be saved. Sealed with a kiss, Emma is making a vow to save him and it is profoundly moving.

As the curse envelops them and Emma cradles Killian, we were reminded of the moment from the Pilot when Snow held onto Charming as the curse surrounds them. This may be one of the loveliest Captain Swan/Snowing parallels ever. Emma was not always a hopeful person. She lived a life of disappointment and betrayals. So to see her in the same position as her mother, the person who is the epitome of hope, is very touching. The circumstances may be different, but they are both fearful but full of hope. Snow knew their memories would be gone, but still believed happiness could be restored because she believed in her daughter. Emma knows that that both she and Killian will have the darkness inside of them, and that it will not be an easy road to gain anyone’s trust or understanding. But in both cases Emma is meant to be the hero. Only this time she has the choice. It is not a destiny assigned to her, but one she takes on because she believes in the power of their love. She can be his savior. If that is not poetically beautiful, I don’t know what is.

The Cutest Dark Ones Ever!

In one of the episode’s happiest moments, Emma and Killian kiss and smile before separating. Of course things go badly after this, but in this brief scene Emma and Killian are just about the cutest Dark Ones to ever exist. They may both be dressed head to toe in black leather, but they are also, to speak in internet terms, precious cinnamon rolls. And who did not love Killian’s little moan as they kissed? This was, in my mind, a little sneak preview to the long awaited CS coffee time.

The Field of Middle Mist Flowers:

This glorious field of pink blossoms will forever hold a special place in Emma and Killian’s story. With each poignant scene encompassing the power of true love, there were two things in particular that struck me. One, each time there appears to me more flowers than there were the previous time. Is this meant to have a deeper meaning than simply being aesthetically beautiful? Perhaps it a visual clue that their feelings are continuing to blossom into a field of endless love. The other interesting aspect of these three different scenes is that they each occur at different, successive time of day. The first one was early morning with the sun rising behind them, demonstrating that a new dawn is upon them filled with hope. The second appears to be in late afternoon just before dusk signifying that darkness is approaching, which is ever significant because Emma saves Killian by turning him into a Dark One. The last scene, takes place in the deepest of night. The sky is black, and they are both inflicted with darkness, but the endless seas of flowers surrounding them still emanates their bright pink beauty symbolizing that despite the darkness, hope remains.

“I Love You–I Love You, Too”:

It does not matter what Dark Hook says about playing her, this first time Emma and Killian exchange” I love you, I love you too,” was genuine. There can never be a time where Killian telling Emma he loves her is not imbedded with honest and sincerity. For that reason, and the way he pulls her towards him for a passionate kiss, I have nothing but deep affection for this scene. And as my friend Mimi (@ShimmeringCrown) pointed out, it appears as if he lifts her up as they are kissing because she is suddenly almost as tall as him. More kisses like this in the future would be most welcome.

What love stories are made of:

As I said in my review, “One of the things that is so special about their dynamic is that they demonstrate so much raw emotion and intensity, showcasing deep and real complexities.” (X) All couples fight. All go through struggles. That is what real relationships are like. But I was a little surprised how some were so taken aback by their interactions when this is what so many love stories are made of. Were their scenes harsh and difficult to watch? Yes of course. Be we know not only deep down they love each other more than anything, but that they both have the greatest evil inside of them. Honesty, fights, moments of hope lost, threats and cruel words are seen in some of the greatest love stories of all time.

Although the ending of Casablanca does not have the happy one Emma and Killian will surely have (it is too different of circumstances) we know that Rick and Ilsa’s love is true. But they have very dark moments. He is angry and heartbroken and does not want to forgive her. She even pulls a gun on him! But no one can deny they still love each other.

In Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth and Darcy say very hurtful things to each other. He insults her family, considers her station in life beneath him, she calls him hateful and arrogant and the kind of man she could never marry. But they overcome these prejudices against each other and clearly forgive each other through falling in love, seeing who they truly are. Are you sensing a pattern here? Words said in anger and misunderstanding can be forgiven.

Lastly, Allie and Noah in The Notebook fight each other constantly. There have so much fire that it either comes out in intense passion or intense anger. She pushes and hits him, he wants to wait and see and anticipates breaking up, and in one of the film’s most real moments he lays out a real truth about them and the complexities of love. She will tell him when he is being a “son of a bitch” and he will tell her when “she is being a pain in the ass, which is 99% of the time!” But he wants to be with her, forever. That is what love is all about. You struggle and fight but when you love each other you work for it despite it being difficult.

Allie and Noah’s love is deep and true just like Emma and Killian’s. And after all this of the Hell they will have to endure, I want Emma and Killian to die in each other’s arms, just like Allie and Noah did, having lived a long and beautiful life together. But without the memory loss because I think Once has had their fill of this.

Endless Wedding Foreshadowing:

As my fellow, wonderful Oncer @G8rMom7 pointed out to me, Merida’s line of taking an arrow to the knee is an allusion to getting married. Upon further research apparently it refers to when we propose falling to one knee. Furthermore, in the beginning of the Middlemist scene with Emma walking alone, there is definitely a wedding look about it. Not only is she walking down an aisle, (and why is there suddenly one there?), but she is walking in a slow deliberate pace like that of a bride. If there is not a wedding at the end of Season 5, I will be very much shocked!

Hands Entwined:

Dark Ones or not they still continue to place an emphasis on their hands entwined and that is a beautiful thing to me. Killian may have already embraced the darkness when they walk back towards Granny’s but he still holds hands with her. And in the moment he really needed it she holds out her hand to him. It is a sign of trust and fidelity as it always has been. Something tells me the finale may reiterate this unbreakable bond.

Killian vs. Rumplestiltskin:

I realized a very intriguing, and perhaps very telling difference between Killian and Rumple as Dark Ones on their two paralleling scenes on the Jolly Roger. As the Dark One, Rumple maims Killian, cutting off his hand. On the other hand, as the Dark One, Killian heals Rumple, restoring his leg back to normal so he no longer has a limp. It’s interesting how both of these afflictions were caused by Rumple as well, but Killian chooses to heal rather than hurt in this instance.

Team Plan vs. Team Flip:

I have been entertained and intrigued by the debate amongst Oncers on Twitter and tumblr these past few days. The debate is simple: is Killian playing the darkness and simply engaging in a plan to fool everyone and in turn save Emma, or has he truly succumb to the darkness and his behavior is all as it seems, leaving the opportunity for him to overcome the darkness in the end? Honestly, I am 50/50 on this debate and can it see it playing it out either way. Both have the potential to be moving and epic and both can make sense narratively. Although I will admit I do think him having a plan is a bit more believable to his character, it truly can go either way at this point. Both scenarios however will leave me equally moved as they are both heart wrenching. If Killian has a plan, he is playing the darkness and everyone superbly. His words are pushing Emma to no longer work on her own but seek out help from her family, and convince her that he is so far gone, she has no choice but destroy him. If you think of this scenario it is absolutely heartbreaking but sounds like something Killian Jones would do for Emma Swan. He knows that if she thinks he can be saved she will never let him go. She proved that by tethering him to Excalibur. But if she believes the true Killian is indeed gone, she will be able to kill him and destroy the darkness once and for all. Then he can die happy knowing she will have a future free from the darkness. That is all that he wanted for her. If Killian is indeed doing this, think about how difficult it must be. He has to do unspeakable dark things and hurt the woman he loves. But if anyone is willing to do what it takes to ensure her happiness it would be Killian. On the opposite end, if he is not playing everyone and truly is exactly as dark as he seems, this can also playing out in a heart wrenching and poignant way. We know how possible it is to have him succumb to the darkness. He has done so before and believes he is not strong enough to fight it. But Killian is stronger than he thinks. And if indeed he is dark and no longer his truest self, there will no doubt come a moment where he will snap out of it to save Emma. This would be very powerful and showcase how strong and heroic he can be, to be able to break free from the control of the greatest evil of all time, solidifying Killian Jones as a true hero. Either way, I will surely be an emotional mess and be crying buckets of tears.

Killian’s heroics & good deeds:

Speaking of Killian displaying true heroics, I was a little disheartened that David questioned Emma’s faith in Killian especially when he has seen so much of what he has done. No one is denying his bad deeds from his past, but since starting on that path of good he has done a great deal to save or help Emma, Henry and or members of the Charming family and others important to them and I wanted to list them all:

– Risked his life by taunting the giant atop the beanstalk so Emma she throw the sleeping powder on to him.

– He may have taken it in the first place, but he saved Aurora’s heart from falling into the portal, losing his advantage in the sword fight with Emma.

– Although he stole the bean that allowed Greg and Tamara to kidnap Henry, he came back, and on his own. Although he had Emma’s words in his head, he still made that choice to turn his ship around without anyone showing any kind of belief in him.

– Once he found out what happened to Henry he immediately offered his ship and his services to help rescue him.

– He gave Emma Neal’s cutlass as a sign of kindness and to give her the weapon she would need in Neverland.

– Guided and fought alongside the Nevengers through Neverland and offered knowledge they did not have, including Tinkerbell. Don’t forget, without her Pan’s shadow would not have been destroyed in Storybrooke.

– Led them all to Neal’s cave where they found the coconut shell that would eventually be used to trap Pan’s shadow.

– Saved David’s life by leading him to the cure for dreamshade, told him exactly the price, and respected David’s wishes and did not say anything about it.

– Told Snow and David immediately that Pan paid him a visit and that Neal was still alive.

– Revealed a difficult, heartfelt secret he may not have otherwise, but did so to help save Neal, all while believing Emma still loved and may have wanted to be with him.

– Upon receiving a message, he traded his ship for a magic bean in order to find Emma in New York.

– Did not give up on helping her even after she threw him in jail.

– Continued to work alongside the heroes in Stoybrooke to fight the Wicked Witch.

– Took Henry to safety away from Zelena and told him about his father to ease his sorrow.

– Followed Emma through Zelena’s time portal so she would not be alone.

– Helped correct the mistake and make sure Snow and Charming would fall in love as they were meant to.

– Helped David as they tried to rescue Emma from the ice cave, Taking Bo Peep’s staff, which gave Elsa hope that Anna was still alive.

– Helped Elsa with her desire to find out more about the Snow Queen.

– Did everything in his power to stop Rumplestiltskin from killing Emma, confessing his mistakes on her voicemail no matter the consequences, and vowing that he would die fighting to save her.

– Asks Rumple for one dying wish: to leave Emma and the rest of Storybrooke be and not harm them.

– Showed Belle compassion and understanding when they thought Rumple was gone forever.

– Helped restore Ursula’s happy ending, gaining knowledge of Rumple’s true intentions towards Emma.

– Helped Emma forgive her parents for lying to her.

– In the AU, helped Henry rescue Emma from the tower, fighting a dragon even though he was terrified.

– In the AU, sacrificed himself so Emma and Henry could escape.

– Told Snow not to control Emma with the dagger, and helped stop Emma from crushing Merida’s heart.

– Helped Emma quiet the darkness inside her.

– Gave Emma his brother Liam’s ring, which he believed could be the reason he is alive, to keep her safe.

– Saved Snow and everyone else’s life by taking down Arthur and getting Excalibur back, mortally wounding himself in the process.

I think Killian has proven to be a hero and a good man, many, many times. He may be facing his biggest struggle yet, but I have faith in him. The finale is only one day away and I eagerly anticipate seeing love finally destroy the darkness!
