Once Upon a Time 10 Year Anniversary: Top 20 Best Episodes

Once Upon a Time was a magical, heartfelt and engaging drama series that aired on ABC from 2011 to 2018, and its impact on myself and countless others is immeasurable. It brought together groups of people who became friends, it inspired artists and writers alike, and it gave audiences a weekly dose of fun new twists on classic fairy tale characters and stories, many inspired by Disney films, as well as lovely affirmations about hope, family and true love. Sometimes corny, never perfect, but always well intended, this series was and will always be incredibly special to me for so many reasons. Over time I learned to just embrace it all and focus on all the positives that this series provided. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Pilot episode, which feels very surreal. Watching this series from the very first night I still remember the feeling I got from the moment I heard the first notes of Mark Isham’s gorgeous score and saw Prince Charming riding his regal steed in search of the fair Snow White. I was instantly captivated. Looking back on the 7 seasons and 156 episodes, there were some highs and lows, but when it comes to any series we hold dear to our hearts, remembering the very best is what brings a smile to our faces. Let’s look back at the 20 greatest episodes of Once Upon a Time.

20. The Crocodile (Season 2, Episode 4)

The first appearance of Killian Jones and the origin story of Captain Hook also reveals another side to the character of Rumplestilskin. Not only is he the Beast to Belle, he is the Crocodile to Hook. In a dark and complicated story, Hook runs away with Rumplestlskin’s wife Milah, and when he becomes the Dark One seeks revenge and a magic bean, as he kills Milah in anger for abandoning him and their son Baelfire and cuts off Hooks hand, who vows to find a way to kills the demon who murdered his love. And thus a great rivalry is formed between two dynamic characters. Meanwhile in the present day Mr. Gold is dealing with his newfound relationship with Belle in Storybrooke who wants him to find courage and learn to trust her as the pair find themselves a in new form of their relationship that is precarious but hopeful.

19. Tallahassee (Season 2, Episode 6)

In the first true backstory for Emma Swan, we see how her past misadventures and life of crime with her partner and father to Henry, Neal Cassidy, contrasts with her present day adventure with Captain Hook climbing up a beanstalk to steal a magical compass from a giant. A past love and possible future love, we learn more about what makes these characters tick, their motivations, and their trust issues all in one engaging and poignant story. “Tallahassee” represented what could have been Emma, and is the reason she has closed herself off to love. Combine that with Snow and Aurora bonding over the painful dreams that come from being under a sleeping curse, something the end of the episode reveals is plaguing Henry as well, we are treated to one amazing episode.

18. Smash the Mirror (Season 4, Episodes 8 and 9)

One of the most important moments of development for main character Emma came in this two part episode from the “Frozen” arc of season 4, which also showcased the seamless blending and beauty of the Frozen story into the Once Upon a Time narrative most especially with the character of Elsa. Meanwhile, Killian’s deal with Rumplestilskin turns dark as his heart is taken, Henry learns that being special comes from his truest believer heart, and we see the bonding of Snow and Regina which leads to a lovely moment of hope between Regina and Robin as a storybook page of another possibility magically appears to them. Most importantly however was the story of Emma’s, so fearful that she cannot control her magic and may hurt the ones she loves that she’s willing to sacrifice it. But in a moment of self acceptance and love, much like her good friend Elsa, Emma gains control of her magic, showcasing the importance of facing your fears and accepting yourself just as you are. It’s a beautiful message in a wonderful episode.

17. Swan Song (Season 5, Episode 11)

Dark, emotional and devastating, this mid season finale of season five brought the Dark Swan arc to its conclusion, leading right into a new story that takes our characters to the Underworld. With the strength of all the Dark Ones wreaking havoc on Storybrooke, we see the true strength of Killian and Emma, and the true darkness of Rumplestilskin. Killian fights back against the darkness he let consume him, willing to sacrifice himself to save Emma and his friends, with Emma being the only one strong enough to do the devastating thing and stab him with Excalibur. Meanwhile, the sacrifice was all for naught as the darkness the couple believe they were destroying forever was merely channeled back into power addicted Rumplestilskin who becomes the Dark One once more. Killian and Emma’s swan song as the Dark Ones was utterly heartbreaking but the episode’s final moments were beautiful in its declaration of steadfast hope as Emma proclaims her family’s motto “I will always find you” to her love Killian.

16. Hat Trick (Season 1, Episode 17)

The character of the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland has never been quite so dynamic and charismatic as Jefferson, who is equal parts mad and twisted, tender and loving. In his backstory we see he is a loving but struggling single father, who is tricked into using her portal jumping magical hat one last time by Regina, trapping him in Wonderland and separating him from his daughter Grace. While in present day Storybrooke, it’s revealed that he not only is awake and aware of the curse but driven so mad that he kidnaps both Mary Margaret and Emma desperate to get his hat to work again. Darker and different than many other episodes, there are aspects that a bit horror-esque in style, making it not only one of the most unique episodes but also one of the most chilling. And yet the moments of clarity and warmth give us that Once Upon a Time charm we love with the everlasting theme of family and faith seen in the moments between Emma and Mary Margaret and Jefferson and Grace.

15. The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (Season 1, Episode 7)

Part of the mystery and suspense of the earliest episodes of Season 1 was who the residents of Storybrooke were back in the Enchanted Forest, and with the presence of Emma the question of will the curse finally weaken and their true personas begin to shine through. In this episode it’s revealed that Sheriff Graham is none other than The Huntsman, a brutal and yet sensitive man who is hired by the Evil Queen to kill Snow White, but is so touched by her compassion that he lets her go free, an act that leads to his heart being taken by Regina, making him at the mercy of her control. In the present day, Graham enlists the help of Emma as he is slowly discovering his truth. And as the two grow close and a kiss awakens him from the curse, it’s a brief flicker of hope of the possibility of love for Emma, but sadly the final moments for Graham as Regina crushes his heart. Intense and sorrowful with eerie atmosphere and unexpected moments, this episode showcased the strength of Emma and the threat of Regina with both the awakening and the loss of a main character.

14. Good Form (Season 3, Episode 5)

The character of Captain Hook has never been so captivating and in this Season 3 episode we finally are treated to the origin of how this dashing rapscallion went from a naive and earnest sailor Killian Jones in the King’s Royal Navy to the pirate captain of the Jolly Roger. From the wonderful, emotional flashbacks to Killian and his older brother Liam, to “Team Mom” working together to get a message to Henry, to the unlikely friendship formed between David and Killian, this episode was thoroughly engaging. And of course who could forget the passionate first kiss between the Savior and the dashing pirate that left both breathless! It was an intense moment filled with passion and promise, and one that propelled the narrative in an amazing way.

13. Lady of the Lake (Season 2, Episode 3)

A beautiful and poignant episode, one of season two’s finest episodes was about love in all its forms – romantic love, familial love, and all its joys and sorrows. There were so many moving moments that warmed our hearts and made us cry, from David bonding with Henry, determined to find their loved ones and partaking in a play sword fight that one cannot help but smile at, to Jefferson reuniting with his daughter Grace after finding the courage to find her, to David’s mother Ruth willingly letting Snow be cured rather than herself, sacrificing her life for her son’s happiness, and Snow and Emma finding what was to be her nursery and Emma breaking down confessing she’s not used to people putting her first. All of these heartfelt moments showcase the strength of that familial bond in truly touching ways. Seeing that Snow and David were married by Lancelot, the man who along with Ruth, is the reason Emma was able to be born was so sweet and moving. But most especially, it was that journey and discovering of that last drop of mystical healing water of Lake Nostos, a drop that made Emma’s existence possible, that was such a beautiful symbol of love and its ability to heal, to restore, and to give strength even when all hope seemed lost.

12. Skin Deep (Season 1, Episode 12)

The character of Rumplstiltskin is one of the most dynamic and complicated characters of the series, and in this episode they explore a new aspect to the impish Dark One- his romantic past. And this past is with none other than Belle, making him this show’s version of the Beast. With moments of sweetness, nuance and tragedy the exploration of this love story brings forth new depths to the already interesting character in a poignant way. Combined with modern day Valentine’s Day woes for Mary Margaret and David and happiness as Ashley and Sean (Cinderella and Prince Thomas) get engaged, this episode proves that love is only true when deep.

11. Sympathy for the DeVil (Season 4, Episode 19)

One of the most unique, decadent and simultaneously deliciously dark and glittering golden episodes of the series, Sympathy for the Devil definitely has the traditional Once Upon a Time format with a dynamic flashback that informs the present day threats. In this case we see why Cruella DeVil’s name is so apropos. She is a gin soaked, sultry villain, who refreshingly has no morally redeemable qualities. She is evil for evil’s sake, and in the flashbacks we are treated to a story of a 1920s neo noir world of champagne and jazz, with a manipulative villain who steals an author’s heart and his magical quill for her own evil and murderous desires. These flashback moments are absolutely brilliant in their uniqueness and drama, while the reveal that in the present that Cruella cannot harm anyone as Emma is slowly descending into to darkness will give you chills. This episode is fabulous, darling!

10. Fall (Season 4, Episode 10)

Fasted paced, emotive and engaging, “Fall” is brilliant in its ability to move and give each character their time to shine with moments of villainy and true love that left us crying and completely captivated. Sometimes it’s the build up to something that is more intriguing and such is the case as our heroes prepare for Ingrid’s spell of “Shattered Sight” which will turn them into their worst selves. And the love filled moments were nothing short of breathtaking. Regina and Robin sharing a lovely goodbye wanting to remember this moment as true, real, and filled with looks of love, Elsa and Anna’s strong sisterly bond with Elsa’s wish to find her sister being so pure it miraculously reunites them, Anna and Kristoff swearing their love, hands clasped believing they’re about to drown, Emma and Killian saying goodbye in a heart wrenching moment with Killian believing it to be for the last time, and finally Snow and David not only demonstrating unfailing faith in their love for each other, but also in Emma’s ability to always succeed. The episode flies by and the ending montage with the emotional musical score was the perfect example of how Once Upon a Time can be so beautiful aesthetically and dramatically. And the final shot of Snow and David as their expressions change from love to utter disdain was absolutely chilling!

9. New York City Serenade (Season 3, Episode 12)

In an episode that feels both like a fresh new start and a parallel to the Pilot, we are treated to a mix of mystery, exciting new characters and relationships, tender and poignant familial moments, a little humor, and the cusp of romance, as the episode shows both present day New York City with Killian trying to convince Emma that she must help save her family that is in danger, as well as flashbacks to the people of Storybrooke newly returned to their original home in the Enchanted Forest. There is just about everything in there to satisfy the audience as the show resets with another curse that’s brought everyone back to Storybrooke in the end, with no memory of the missing year, while Emma, who trusted her gut, and a devilishly handsome pirate and drinks a potion that restores hers, bringing her back in to action, ready to be the Savior once more, complete with red leather jacket. And just like the Pilot which had her familial True Love- her son Henry- bring her to the sleepy little town, this time it’s her eventual romantic True Love who does. And just like the title suggests, every little moment like the one just mentioned, and others like Snow and Regina bonding over letting go of their children, or Robin Hood aiding the queen, Killian, trying to humorously navigate the modern world, or the reveal of the Wicked Witch Zelena, it feels like a divine serenade.

8. A Land Without Magic (Season 1, Episode 22)

The season 1 finale of Once Upon a Time was a fantastic example of what the series did in spades. It gave us an exciting back and forth dichotomy of flashback and present day each mirroring each other in significant ways, in this case mirroring Charming’s heroic efforts battling the dragon Maleficent in order to find Snow White and awaken her from a sleeping curse, with his equally heroic daughter Emma, now embracing and believing in magic, battling Maleficent to find a way to save her son Henry who too had fallen into a sleeping curse. But what Once Upon a Time did so well and so often was subvert expectations. For as much as this show was about what we come to expect about love about fairy tales with romantic stories of true love defeating evil, seen here as Charming awakens Snow, Once Upon a Time, was perhaps even more so about the power of familial love. And when Emma kisses her son, not only waking him up but breaking the curse of Storybrooke, we see that the love between a parent and child is just as strong and powerful, with the curse being broken a poignant metaphor for the magic and awakening of one’s true self and spirit that comes from opening your heart.

7. Snow Falls (Season 1, Episode 3)

One of the first truly romantic episodes of the series gives us the backstory of how Snow White and Prince Charming first fell in love, contrasted against modern day Storybrooke where Charming, or David Nolan, wakes up from his coma, after Snow reads to him and he wanders off not remembering who he is. The concept that their true identifies are still glimmering beneath the surface in Storybrooke is showcased here wonderfully, while we are treated to a rousing and fresh new take on a classic story, where Snow White is not a damsel, but rather a thief on the run, who doesn’t swoon at first sight of the prince but hits him over the head with a rock. This established the show’s brilliant portrayal of heroines in a different light without sacrificing any romance these tales are known for. On the contrary, we see two well defined characters who a strong willed and find not only an attraction but mutual respect for each other, fall in love in the fairy tale world in a realistic and lovely new way, showcasing how Once Upon a Time is both traditional and modern, and above all hopeful.

6. The Song in Your Heart (Season 6, Episode 20)

This sweet, fun filled but also very emotional and poignant episode of Once Upon a Time tackles something that many a series has done to varying degrees of success, but one that seems prime for a show about fairy tales, primarily Disney inspired ones: the musical episode. And Once Upon a Time succeeded beautifully. With songs that are melodically and lyrically fantastic, giving each character their moment to shine in the spot light, we see the idea that characters suddenly burst into song blend perfectly and seamlessly into the already established narrative for the season. With the Black Fairy threatening Storybrooke and the approaching wedding of Emma and Killian, we flashback to a wish Snow made for her unborn daughter, culminating in the realization that Emma, and those who love her, have had a song in their heart all along, giving her the strength she needed. And when Emma and Killian are wed surrounded by their family and friends, them all bursting one of the most glorious moments, ever, we see what this show embodies: That “There’s no storm they can’t outrun and they will always find the sun.” In other words, that no matter what darkness may come, love will always prevail.

5. Operation Mongoose (Season 4, Episodes 22 and 23)

With a story that literally has our charatcers trapped inside a book that is a topsy tuvry world where they each are embodying different personas, the two part finale of season 4  gave us fun adventure, romantic drama, emotional moments of sacrifice, the ever apparent theme of family and love, and gripping final moments that leave the viewers breathless. In this alternate world, Rumplestiltskin is a grand hero, Emma is no longer the Savior, Snow White is an Evil Queen, Regina is wanted bandit, Killian is a meek deckhand and Robin Hood wants to marry Zelena, giving the actors and characters new territory to portray, and the audience a dramatic alternate universe to witness,  with beautiful moments where truth breaks free. Regina chooses to save Henry instead of stopping Robin’s wedding, while he holds a wounded Regina afterwards, while Killian sacrifices himself so Emma and Henry can escape. In the end we get a mix of a happy ending when Henry becomes the new author and saves the day, and a dark new potential as Emma’s sacrifices herself and becomes the new Dark One, with the final image of her name on the dagger taking the term dramatic cliffhanger to a whole new level.

4. Birth (Season 5, Episode 8)

Dramatic, fast-paced, intense, romantic and filled with visceral performances, “Birth” is the type of episode that makes you believe in television’s remarkable ability to move you deeply. Up until this moment is Season 5, the origins of Emma’s descent into darkness, was a great mystery. But in this episode the drama comes to a head as the dark truth is revealed showing that Emma’s saving Killian’s life in Camelot simultaneously gives birth to another Dark One. The blend of sweetness, exquisite melodrama, a haunting musical score, truly moving performances, and one of the most remarkable twists the show had ever done, “Birth” was an episode that stays with the audience in very affecting ways.

3. Pilot (Season 1, Episode 1)

One of the greatest Pilot episodes ever produced, the concept that is a mix of fairy tales and modern sensibilities with fresh new takes on classic characters, which are so well defined from the beginning, the first episode of this series is brilliant and beautiful. The episode that started it all is one of the best of the series, establishing the tone of the series perfectly as we see that mystery, magic, family drama, epic love, hope and belief are abundant and showcased exquisitely with each character in different ways. The approaching of the dark curse was intense, evocative and dramatic. And the beginning of Emma’s story was sad but hopeful as we see a woman who is strong but deeply wounded. She may be cynical but still buys a cupcake on her birthday and makes a wish. And then her life irrevocably changes. That belief that love and happiness are possible and that things can get better is the theme of the show and is demonstrated touchingly by Emma’s wish as well as the final image of Henry as he sees the Storybrooke clock tower move for the first time in his life. These images epitomize that beautiful and timeless theme of hope.

2. Going Home (Season 3, Episode 11)

A game changing episode if there ever was one, the midseason finale of Season 3, gave the audience things that were completely unexpected while still giving us the drama and twists the show is known for. While trying to stop Peter Pan from enacting the dark curse, we see both Rumplestilskin and Regina make grave sacrifices in order to save everyone from once again losing their memories, and being cursed into ageless, clueless monotony. Rumple gives up his life as he kills his father, while Regina says goodbye to Henry, and brings everyone back to the Enchanted Forest while Storybrooke disappears, seeing Emma and Henry drive away to a new life, blissful with new memories of having always been together. The tears that came at every new revelation in the episode were only matched by the excitement when Killian knocks on Emma’s door in New York one year later, with a warning and True Love’s kiss attempt, and the anticipation of so much to come. The greatest episodes bring forth the gambit of emotions and “Going Home” does this extraordinarily.

1. Snow Drifts/There’s No Place Like Home (Season 3, Episodes 21 and 22)

The pinnacle of Once Upon a Time magic was this two part finale of Season 3 that embodied everything the show exemplified beautifully. In a clear homage to Back to the Future, Emma and Hook accidentally fall through a portal to the past and interrupt her parents first meeting, so like Marty and Doc must race against the clock and help get Snow White and Prince Charming back on the road to True Love while having to deal with the Evil Queen’s villainy and Rumplestilskin’s unpredictability. With time travel, sword fights, romantic waltzes, intrigues, a wedding, magic, the beauty of seeing these stories both rewrite themselves, while still arriving at the same place, this episode showcases that lovely dichotomy of both free will and destiny, how our choices truly define us, and that home is not just a place but the people you love. Emma accepting Storybrooke as her own is a special moment in her character’s journey as it shows an acceptance of her parents, of the magic that lives in her, and the love she is finding with Killian Jones, the man who gave up his home- his ship the Jolly Roger- to bring her back to hers. That moment and the subsequent montage includes seeing all the couples radiating happiness: Emma and Killian sharing their first love filled kiss, Belle and Rumplestilskin’s wedding, Regina and Robin Hood on a happy and romantic stroll, and Snow and Charming basking in the joy of their new son. And this moment and truly the entire episode is what Once Upon a Time exemplifies, the power of Hope and True Love.

2016 Year in Review: TV’s Best of the Best in Moments, Quotes & More

Overall Show: Timeless
Adventure, intrigue, mystery, humor, romance, engaging characters, wonderful performances. Timeless has everything you could ask for, plus the extremely fun additive of a time traveling premise. Of all the shows of 2016, this was the one where choosing a favorite episode seemed impossible because each and every week came another amazing adventure from The Alamo, to the Moon landing, to meeting the likes of Ian Fleming or Bonnie and Clyde. The Time Team versus formidable villains Garcia Flynn and Rittenhouse are made intriguing by the seeming opposing viewpoints, and indeed the show is made heartfelt and moving by the ways Lucy, Wyatt and Rufus so quickly come to care for each other. From the embraces to the willingness to protect each other to the hilarious use of modern aliases, Timeless is as timeless a form of entertainment and fine storytelling as there ever was.

Top 10 Shows: 1. Timeless 2. Once Upon a Time 3. Stranger Things 4. This Is Us 5. Fuller House 6. Lucifer 7. Agent Carter 8. iZombie 9. Downton Abbey 10. The Goldbergs

Overall Moment:
Emma and Killian are reunited (Once Upon a Timecs kiss2

After a truly heartbreaking goodbye in the Underworld, the moment Killian returned to Emma, his life miraculously restored by Zeus himself, was as beautiful and moving a scene as Once Upon a Time has ever done. True Love prevailed, proving that the place Killian belongs is with Emma Swan. And from the way the soft rain symbolized extinguishing the fires of the Underworld and signified a renewal of life, to their incredulous expressions of pure, unencumbered joy, to the sweet cheek kisses and passionate embraces, this was not only of the most exquisite moments for Emma and Killian, but also one of the most beautiful reunions (and moments) to ever grace our screens.

Eleven Saves Mike and Dustin (Stranger Things)stranger.gif

It was the kind of moment where so many emotions were present. Fearful for Mike, angry at the bullies terrorizing him and Dustin into the unthinkable, shock and relief by Eleven’s heroics, and compassion at her admission of causing the “door” to open. We laugh at Dustin crying out “she’s our friend and she’s crazy” and cry at the embrace of friends after such life and death traumatic moment. It does not matter the situation, true friendship and bravery is always touching to see- and seeing this from children is ever poignant.

The Time team bond when stuck in the past (Timeless)timeless

With the lifeboat out of commission, battling the French and captured by Shoshone Indians, Lucy, Wyatt and Rufus feared they may forever be stranded in 1754. So it’s no wonder that they open up about personal memories, regrets, and hopes with compassion for what each is feeling. It’s a simple moment on the surface- just three people talking. But it reveals important things about each other and shows how strong that bond between them has grown. And when the three are back in the “repaired” life boat with nothing but faith that they will return home safely, and the three hold hands in wait, I was moved to tears.

Blink and you miss it Moment:
David and Killian hug (Once Upon a Time)cc hug.gif

It may have been in the background of the scene, but when Killian surprises everyone with his return from the Underworld and David gives him a hug, my heart soared. These two men have come a long way and have become not only mates, but like brothers. When they first met, David probably would have never thought he’d ever consider Killian such and willingly embrace him like a brother, but that moment arrived and it was very touching, albeit much too brief. Hopefully someday a moment like this will be in the forefront.

Rufus helps a child reach a water fountain (Timeless)

rufus fountain.gif

Rufus has a true heart and is very much the moral compass of the series, so it’s no surprise to see him do such a thing. It’s a moment that is not needed. It adds nothing to the plot of the episode. But it is a great character moment that further demonstrates the kind of man Rufus is- thoughtful and willing to help anyone, able to notice things some may overlook. It’s a simple gesture but no less meaningful or endearing.

Want to Watch Series:
The Crown: A period drama about the British royal family with a production value and a cast that is impressive and award worthy- it’s actually amazing I have not watched this series yet. This is at the top of the “To Watch” list.

When Calls the Heart: This show looks as sweet and lovely as can be. With so few wholesome shows that are of good quality (and ones that are period shows), it’s refreshing to see a G rated drama be successful. It looks a lot like a childhood favorite of mine, Road to Avonlea, so this definitely is one I would long to catch up with very soon.

Series Finale: Downton Abbey
An exremely satisfying conclusion to a sumptuous, moving drama, characters were given happy endings with still the promise of more to come someday. I could not have asked for a better conclusion for the Crawley family and the staff of the English manor. In the end they are all family, everyone finds their place in the world and with each other, and the ever wise and witty appropriately Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) get’s the finale word. And it was the best!

‘Aww’ Heartwarming moment:
Killian tries to make Ashley’s daughter smile (Once Upon a Time)killy-baby

There have been many sweet moments on this show, but the sight of Killian Jones placing whipped cream on his nose and trying to make Ashely’s little girl laugh will go down in history as one of most heart melting moments ever. One of the best things about Killian’s character is the way we have seen how gentle and sweet he can be, and when that is directed toward making a child smile, it’s as endearing as can be. It’s no wonder Emma looked on with such love and awe

(X)

Inspiring Moment:
Lucy educates a NASA scientist about women (Timeless)

There need not be any more explanation of this empowering speech, except that she deserves a round of applause!

Swoon-worthy Romantic Moment:
Killian reads Emma the Storybook (Once Upon a Time)cs hand kiss.gif

With countless romantic moments between the Savior and the Pirate, what made this moment such a swoon-worth romantic one was its simplicity, deeper meaning, and admiration between the couple. A simple and assuredly unromantic setting, Emma is plagued with tremors, fear and doubt. So Killian gives her comfort and support by reminding her of who she is- the product of true love and a remarkable woman capable of overcoming even the darkest of times. That fact that he does so by reading her parent’s story to her, which is indelibly entwined with hers (and Killian’s) is undeniably sweet. And his reverence as he grasps her hand and kisses it, no longer trembling, is a beautiful representation of the power of love and the power of storytelling. They can chase away our fears and replace them with hope. This scene proved that a storybook romantic moment can happen anywhere as long as you have belief in each other and in love, and the overall beauty of Emma’s True Love reading to her about the power of True Love is unparalleled.

(X)

Sweetest Moment:
Snow and Charming create a True Love Sapling (Once Upon a Time)sapling

When thinking about Once Upon a Time’s True Love couple, sweet is most definitely one of the main descriptors. Importantly the couple may be as sweet as pie, but they are never cloying or saccharine because there is always something deeper behind their moments. And after 6 seasons, it was amazing to showcase something new and poignant as discovering they met and shared a connection long before they ever knew. It takes a remarkable couple to be able to create a magical sapling- they are said to be very rare and created from the first spark of true love. After saving her life and Snow reciprocate David’s kindness telling him she no longer feels alone, it was so beautiful to see the brief touch of hands create that spark. Their love is ever so sweet, and clearly as true as it gets.

Daily Dose of Heart: Home & Family
Every day Mark, Debbie and the rest of the family at the Hallmark Channel delights us with interviews, games, DYI projects, cooking and more, and all with incredible amount of heart. Watching this show is the perfect way to fill the beginning of our day with fun and smiles, and also moments of unexpected depth. While most talks shows dwell on the negative and have humor which can be crass, Home and Family is wholesome (and for me relatable) and gives me hope that kindness and good people exist in the world.

Smile Inducing Moment:
Kimmy and Fernando sing the I Love Lucy Theme Song (Fuller House)lucy.gif

Being a lifelong fan of I Love Lucy was enough to make me smile as Kimmy and Fernando dressed up as the iconic couple for Halloween. But the new take on the theme song, which funnily enough had lyrics that are perfect for this couple as well, had me grinning ear to hear. How could not smile at this moment?

The Agent Carter Squad walk into battle (Agent Carter)

squad

They may not be the Avengers, but you will be hard pressed to find a group with more courage and tenacity than Peggy’s rag tag squad. There are not many moments that I would called golden, but this group walking down the street with confidence to Bing Crosby’s “Pistol Packin’ Mama” is indeed smile inducing gold.

‘Finally’ Moment:
Lorelai and Luke get married (Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life)
After denied this moment in the original series, the one thing I wanted to see in the revival was for Lorelai and Luke to get their wedding- their happily ever after. And it was even more enchanting than I ever could of hoped for. With whimsy set up by Kirk (he finally did something right) and a montage set to the first song the couple danced to, this moment was joyful and lovely and exactly the kind of magic they deserve. They finally had their moment!!

Edith gets married (Downton Abbey)
After so many times where her happy ending seemed in sight only for it to be snatched from her, I was beyond happy to see the middle Crawley daughter finally find someone who truly loves her and the two joined together in marriage. She has become the perfect blend of a modern career woman who still wanted to share her life with an equal partner. It was incredibly lovely to see both dreams come true for her.

Best Teamwork:
Killian, Emma and Arthur (Once Upon a Time)
Killian teaming up with King Arthur was one of those moments I never knew I wanted but when it happened, I absolutely loved it. On a shallow level, as Cruella says, they make quite the “stubble sandwich,” but there was much more to this team up then a handsome duo. It demonstrated great forgiveness on Killian’s part to work with the man responsible for his death, and gave Arthur a new purpose and chance at redemption, wondering if the Underworld was always the kingdom he was meant to restore. This episode also featured  another sense of teamwork between Killian and Emma as the two could literally sense each other across realms. As Killian places the missing pages into the storybook in the Underworld and they magically appeared in the book – to Emma – she just smiled with a knowing look that this was from him. That’s next level true love goals if there ever was any.

The Time Team ((Timeless)
The combination of Lucy, Wyatt and Rufus may be unorthodox but that is what perhaps makes it work. Three good people who care about each mission and care about history, and importantly care about each other. There need not be any single moment to pinpoint as far as how they work as a team because even when problems arise in the end they prevail and do so together.

Heartbreaking Moment:
Emma and Killian say goodbye in the Underworld (Once Upon a Time)cs-goodbye

Even though Emma and Killian have gone through other truly heartbreaking moments, and even though Killian was able to miraculously come back to Emma, the moment these two say goodbye to each other in the underworld with heartfelt and selfless promises to each other was the kind of heart shattering moment that’s difficult to recover from. And that was because it felt so real and so final. No magical swords, simply two people, unable to hold back their tears, not wanting to let go but doing so anyway with a final kiss, holding hands until the last possible moment. Look up the term ugly crying and no doubt you’ll find the scene.

Saddest Sacrifice:
Robin Hood (Once Upon a Time)

oqoq1

Robin may have shown just how much he loves Regina and demonstrated an act of truelove showing what an amazing man he is, but that doesn’t make his sacrifice any less sad. Seeing his soul disappear before Regina was certainly a cause for many tears, and was one of the show’s saddest scenes ever. But the loving outlaw still lives in our hearts and who knows what the future holds for him.

(X)

Eleven (Stranger Things)

11.gif

If someone was to watch the scene where Eleven sacrifices herself for her friends, or as she turns around she simply says “Goodbye Mike,” and they don’t shed a single tear or at least have a lump in their throat, then they might be made of stone. Even though it’s clear that she still live in the show’s final moments, seeing a child who had been so tormented feeling like the only thing to do is give up her own life is as sad a truth as anything.

(X)

Tearful Moment:
Lorelai’s Phone Call to her Mother (Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life)lorelai

A few moments from the Gilmore Girls revival brought me to tears, but none more so that Lorelai’s conversation to her mother about her favorite memory of her father. A proper memory instead of the one she shared on the day of his funeral, it’s the kind of long speech that Graham always excels at and it was brimming with raw emotion. How could you not be brought to tears?

(X)

The ‘Big Three’ Reveal (This is Us)

big3

This is Us has so far been a show where just about every week there is at least one scene (maybe more) that can bring us to tears. But there was something so special about the moment you realized exactly who the Big Three were that was inordinately touching and the kind of beautiful twist that makes you smile through your tears.

Emma Comforts Henry about her fate as Savior (Once Upon a Time)swan-beleiver

The Emma/Henry relationship has always held a special place in many of our hearts, and one could not empathize with Henry worrying about his mother’s fate and his guilt about bring her to Storybrooke in the first place. But like any good parent, instead of dwelling on an uncertain future she focuses on the good things being the Savior has brought her: love, a family, and him. And saying that the actual magic in her life is him was so incredibly moving.

Nostalgic Moment:
Steve gives DJ a pillow person (Fuller House)

djdj1

As an avid fan of Full House, having watching the episodes many times, I just knew what Steve’s birthday present to DJ was going to be the moment he described it. I remember how much she loved that silly thing, so it was beyond sweet of him and for the show to bring this back with DJ’s traditional “Thank you, thank, thank you.” And for this moment and many others I am team “DJ & Steve For-evah.”

(X)

Guest Star:
Sean Maguire (Timeless)

sean timeless.gif

After losing him on OUAT,  I was beyond thrilled to see Maguire back on my screen, especially playing such an iconic role. The creator of James Bond, Ian Fleming, as played by Maguire is charming, debonair, and brave and worked perfectly with the Time Team. I only wish they could see him again at another time. If it they can’t visit that time again, there’s always another. Never say never.

Loveliest Moment:
Emma asks Killian to move in with her (Once Upon a Time)cs-happy

If there was one word to describe this heartfelt moment it would be lovely- because everything about it was such: the serene setting at the sun kissed twilight of the day, the soft musical score, the gentle way Emma was caressing Killian’s hair, their sweet smiles, the tender kiss and nose brushes, and the adorable way Emma’s asks Killian to share a home with her from realizing that nothing in life is certain to teasing about how she has some space for black leather to go right alongside her red leather. It was indeed so lovely and a perfect combination of what makes them a wonderful- a couple of both fairy tale beauty and modern sensibilities.

Smile and Cry Moment:
Snow and Charming Sleeping Curse Montage (Once Upon a Time)snowingsnowing1

One could not help but smile at the sweet montage of Snow living their daily lives with a shared sleeping curse- taking care of their baby boy, leaving each other notes- and while it was sweet, there was also a tinge of heartbreak at what they are forced to endure until the curse of broken, not know if it ever will. You can smile and cry at this witness of true love and devotion during a very difficult time.

Plot Twist:
Chloe’s existence was divinely created (Lucifer)
There always seemed to be a hint of destiny between Lucifer and Chloe, especially since she is the only person unaffected by his ability to read people’s desire, but that fact that her entire existence was because her parents were blessed was a twist I did not see coming. Of course from Lucifer’s perspective it makes him feel betrayed by his father and as if nothing can be trusted as real, but from my perspective, it simply gives their relationship an even deeper and more divine meaning and connection.

Pleasant Surprise: Speechless
This show could have gone two ways. It could have been cringe worthy at its insensitivity and depiction of a family dealing with a child with special needs. Luckily it went the other route and Speechless is a sensitive and realistic, funny and touching look at what a family like this goes through on a daily basis, and with Minnie Driver that is just an added bonus. When I was a writing tutor in college, in one of my classes was a young man, who like Micah had cerebral palsy- and Micah reminds me so much of him- funny, smart as a whip, kind, but still capable of less than perfect behavior. It’s refreshing to see this sort of show on Network television.

Captain Swan & More Further Thoughts on “Devil’s Due” and Beyond

This first edition of “Further Thoughts” for 5B is a little bit different as it will be an amalgam of many things. First off, there are some things that I didn’t have the proper space to discuss in my Nerd Machine review. Second, there were a few sections from that review I wanted to elaborate on with visual references. Third, which is something different, I’m speculating and theorizing on a few things. Lastly, before this half of the season began, ABC released some truly beautiful videos that I wanted to relive. Spoilers/speculation ahead so be fair warned.

-Emma and Killian’s House looks like Emma’s Nursery:

When I first watched the episode, I thought the fact that part of Emma’s nursery was in her and Killian’s house in the Underworld was really intriguing. At first I thought it was merely a reflection of Emma’s lost childhood. She never got to experience what her parents had planned for her so her nursery’s purpose was never fulfilled and has unfinished business. And while I still believe that is part of it, when I saw the episode stills and script tease for “The Brothers Jones,” it was confirmed in my mind that this nursery has multiple meanings.

cs script

5x15k

This house was a representation of Emma and Killian’s future, so when he died that future and all its possibilities – including a family – perished as well. Whether it is something they discuss on screen in this upcoming episode or not, there is a specific point in the script to have Killian look at the nursery. In fact, the house is filled with child’s toys surrounding them in the living room and the kitchen. They are surrounded by representations of the family they could have. Perhaps this even means the family they are meant to have and will one day when his life is restored, because a life filled with love, and the product of that love, could very well be Killian’s unfinished business. This house and that future is theirs.

-True Love is Always Felt:

One of the most beautiful things Once Upon a Time has always emphasized is that true love is felt across barriers and realms. That love you feel can manifest in physical ways as if your heart and souls are truly connected. I spoke about this in my review.

“When you truly love someone, no distance or obstacle can ever sever that bond. There’s a profound connection between souls that can be felt in inexplicable ways. Killian knew that it was truly Emma who’d come for him because when you love someone you just know, and when they approach where Killian is being held, Emma clutches his ring, and a feeling of certainty comes over her. He is close. She can feel it.” – Expert from my review at The Nerd Machine

cs love felt

(X) (X)

What I love is that this not only further establishes Emma and Killian’s love as being one that is so deep that it just fell on a spiritual level, but also that it parallels them, once again, to the show’s other epic love story – that of her parents Snow and Charming. When Snow ate the poison apple Charming could feel it. This is the parallel I dreamed of seeing because it’s poignant and beautiful and I’m so happy that Emma has found someone to share such a similar and profound connection with.

-Beautiful Symbolism:

I discussed in my review the exquisite symbolism of Emma rescuing Killian from falling into the River of Lost Souls. They were two people who were indeed lonely, lost souls until love brought light back into their lives. And Emma is definitely the light in Killian’s life. I am just astounded at this visual of the light of appearing on his face, combined with that look of love and adoration. Bravo to director Alrick Riley and director of photography Stephen Jackson for visually capturing such a beautifully significant, symbolic moment.

“But what was so stunning was the first look he gives her was one of relief, joy, and amazement. As she cradles his face that is bathed in darkness, suddenly the light appears on the single eye he can gaze upon her with. Light, and love, had returned to him, because Emma is the light in his life.”- Expert from my review at The Nerd Machine

-Part of the Charming Family:

One of the things I’ve wanted to see this season was Snow and David acknowledge and call Killian family. While that is still verbally yet to happen, much of what they are saying and doing shows that they do consider him family, and someone that will help with open arms. From David always staying on track with their mission of saving him, to Snow calling him a friend, it has been so wonderful to see this development. But the moment in “Devil’s Due” when they arrive to see him safe, David a beaming smile on his face, and Snow calling him by his name, showing sweet, genuine concern for his physical state like a mother, was so lovely and heartwarming. Now if only we could see one or both of them give their future son-in-law a hug!

-Regina and Snow Come Full Circle:

Something I did not have space to discuss in my review what a lovely moments between Regina and Snow where we truly see them come full circle in their relationship. The show began because Regina could not forgive Snow for Daniel’s death. But now so much has changed and I thought it was touching that it was the two of them that found Daniel’s grave together, happy to see that he’d moved on. The two of them are in a better place with each other so it’s fitting that Daniel is too. While at first the scene where Regina helped an ailing  horse seemed random, I realized it was about bringing these characters full circle. Not only that Regina could show mercy and aid the animal she loves dearly and brought her so much joy when she was younger, but also to mirror where Snow and Regina first began, because when they first met Regina saved Snow on a runaway horse. We know things did not go well after this, but they’ve come back around and they are back to that sincere affection they felt when they first met.

-Cruella is Fabulous, Darling:

I don’t have much to say except that I love, love, love Victoria Smurift’s depiction of Cruella. From her voice, dry wit, and demeanor she is absolutely fabulous. And I laughed for days at this image.

-What’s Next for The Jones Brothers and Emma:

While I try not to speculate too much, when a highly anticipated episode is approaching I cannot help it and “The Brothers Jones” is sure to be a spectacular one. If you are curious about how I see things playing out look no further than anything written by qqueenofhades and hooks-and-feathers as I pretty much agree with their theories. But I also want to express my own thoughts and excitement, and build upon what they said. Let’s first look at the sneak peek for the episode.

It seems as if Liam looks uncomfortable at his brother’s praise of him and while I could play out in many ways, I suspect Emma’s lie detector is going off and she can sense that something is off. I do not believe Liam’s is a bad person, nor do I think he is wrong to be protective of his brother. I also feel for Emma because she knows how much Killian loves his brother. And therein lies the drama – drama that I believe will be resolved in moving ways. Besides Emma, there is no one Killian admires and loves it as much as Liam. He always says he is a far better man than he is. But like anyone, Liam is not perfect. He is a good but flawed man just like his younger brother.

jones brothers4.gifjones brothers5

(X) (X)

In “Good Form” Liam says he should’ve listened to Killian. He was stubborn and suffered because of it. Perhaps Liam’s unfinished business is to listen to his brother, truly, and see that he is happy. This is something Killian has to learn as well. That his brother can be someone to admire but not because he’s this perfect being incapable of making a mistake, but because he can overcome them. And if there is a moment where Killian must make a choice between moving on brother or staying with Emma, as I suspect there will be, I will surely lose it. And Killian should not be thought of any less of for it. He has lived a long life, suffered so much pain and loss, and now has been mercilessly tortured. He’s broken. He’s tired. Considering moving on, even for a moment, doesn’t mean he loves Emma any less. He was ready to die when his wound from Excalibur opened. He was just happy knowing Emma would have a future.  And he would never abandon her unless he felt she would be okay and happy. But this all has to be his choice. She has to give him the choice and be willing to let him go. Because deep down we know neither really wants to do that. They want to hold onto each other. What’s important is that it has to be their individual choices to do so. I just hope Liam moves on, reconciles any hard feelings with Emma, and Killian can see his brother at peace.

-Is Hades Threatened by Emma and Killian’s Love?

I wondered why Hades has been torturing Killian so severely even before our heroes arrived, and why he seems so hell-bent on punishing them, beyond the fact that they brought hope to the Underworld. I have a feeling that the true love between Emma and Killian is a great threat to Hades. Adam and Eddy hinted that Killian is a special soul to Hades, and we’ve seen how powerful Emma’s expressed true love can be when her True Love’s Kiss with Henry broke the curse in season one. Can you imagine how powerful the romantic true love for Emma could be? She is the Savior and I’ve always believed that Killian’s character was meant for great things. It’s why the characters were written as such an epic love story. True love is the most powerful magic of all and I truly believe that Emma and Killian’s love is meant to vanquish darkness.

-Go The Distance:

I love the movie Hercules especially the song “Go the Distance.” When I heard they were to do and Underworld arc I was so delighted. But when I really looked at the lyrics to the song, I was so amazed how much they could be related to Emma and Killian’s characters and relationship. Tell me this does not feel so reminiscent of them.

I have often dreamed of a far off place
Where a hero’s welcome would be waiting for me
Where the crowds will cheer when they see my face
And a voice keeps saying, this is where I’m meant to be I’ll be there someday, I can go the distance
I will find my way if I can be strong
I know every mile, will be worth my while
When I go the distance, I’ll be right where I belong
Down an unknown road to embrace my fate
Though that road may wander, it will lead me to you
And a thousand years would be worth the wait
It might take a lifetime but somehow I’ll see it throughAnd I won’t look back, I can go the distance
And I’ll stay on track, no, I won’t accept defeat
It’s an uphill slope but I won’t lose hope
‘Til I go the distance, and my journey is complete

But to look beyond the glory is the hardest part
For a hero’s strength is measured by his heart

Like a shooting star, I will go the distance
I will search the world, I will face its harms
I don’t care how far, I can go the distance
‘Til I find my hero’s welcome, waiting in your arms

I will search the world, I will face its harms
‘Til I find my hero’s welcome, waiting in your arms

And in “Devil’s Due” they are both heroes in back in each other’s arms.

I also wonder how often we are going to apply this quote to this arc?

-Reliving Beauty:

During the night of the 100th episode celebration, ABC released this truly breathtaking video that relives the 100 heroes, villains, lands, adventure, and love in the first 100 episodes. Watching it I was brought to tears and left in awe. It’s videos like this that really demonstrate how remarkable Once Upon a Time really is. It’s a special show and it has changed my life.

“100 Episodes of Once upon a Time”

This next video highlighted the beautiful and epic love story between Emma and Killian and I once again was brought to tears as their most significant moments (and many of my favorite ones) are highlighted to showcase the depth, brevity, and specialness of their love story. What is touching was what was said about their story “They are each other’s happy ending. Their love has lasted through it all…until now.” And then it asks “Will there love survive?” On a show like Once Upon a Time you do not pose a question like this unless the answer is yes. Of course their love can survive. True love after all can survive any distance or obstacle put in its path. Not even death can stop true love. The question is not if, but how. How will Emma and Killian’s love overcome this? The story is not yet complete, but this next chapter of my favorite fairy tale will no doubt prove that love can conquer all.
